Krabacher's historic mark leads Dayton to upset of No. 7 Illinois
DAYTON, Ohio -- Senior Rachel Krabacher surpassed the 1,000 kill mark as the Dayton Flyers defeated the No. 7 Illinois Fighting Illini 3-0 in the opening night of the 2012 Flyer Classic at the Frericks Center.
Krabacher paced UD with a match-best 17 kills and two service aces. The Cincinnati native became just the 20th Dayton Flyer to reach the 1,000 kill milestone as well.
The win is Dayton’s first against a top-10 program.
Alaina Turner and Megan Campbell each added 11 kills, while Samantha Selsky finished with 39 assists and 15 digs. The Flyers (1-0) hit .402 as a team and had nine blocks.
Illinois (0-1) was led by Jocelynn Birks with 16 kills.
Dayton won the first set 25-14 after hitting .464. Krabacher led the way with five kills and Selsky added 10 assists.
In the second set, the Flyers and Illini battled most of the way until UD broke it open late and won 25-17. Selsky and Krabacher continued to lead the UD attack as the team hit .387.
Krabacher helped Dayton close out the match with eight kills in the third set, helping UD to a 25-21 victory. The Flyers hung tough, posting a .300 hitting percentage to sweep the Illini in front of 2,224 fans at the Frericks Center.
