Puget Sound jumps into the top 25 after season-opening victories
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A 4-0 weekend, including two wins against ranked teams, vaulted Puget Sound into the national rankings for the sixth consecutive year. The Loggers were ranked 16th in the newest top-25 poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Tuesday.
The No. 16 ranking ties the Loggers highest ranking from 2011 when they opened the season 11-0.
After just missing the rankings in the preseason poll, the young Loggers squad made an early season statement with a 4-0 record and wins against then-No. 19 Southwestern and then-No. 25 Pacific Lutheran. The Loggers defeated the Pirates in three sets and downed the Lutes in four sets this weekend.
Jackie Harvey was the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament for the second consecutive year with Christina Chun and Jenni Brehove also earning All-Tournament honors.
Pacific Lutheran also rose up the rankings from 25th to 20th this week. Whitworth and Linfield were also mentioned in the "Others Receiving Votes" section.
