UW-Stevens Point upsets No. 18 St. Benedict in five-set match

MINNEAPOLIS – UW-Stevens Point closed out its weekend on a positive note by downing Gustavus Adolphus and 18th-ranked St. Benedict to improve to 6-2 overall on the season.

The Pointers opened day two of the Augsburg Invitational needing to rebound from a loss to the host Auggies the evening before. The team made quick work of the Gusties, winning 25-22, 25-14, 25-19.

The Pointers hit .215 as a team as Sarah Wildish led the way with nine kills Christina Brinkman tallied 11 digs.

In the final game of the weekend, the Pointers faced a much tougher challenge. Looking to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Blazers the week before, the teams battled into extra points with UWSP coming away with the 29-27 set one victory.

The Blazers answered back with victories in sets two and three, 25-22, 25-23 to gain the 2-1 advantage.

Facing their third loss of the season and second of the weekend, the Pointers forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.

In the fifth set the Pointers pulled away and secured the 15-11 victory.

Brinkman tallied a season-high 17 kills while Morgan Bartkowiak and Wildish each chipped in with 12. Alexis Hartman finished the day with 81 assists over two matches.

For her efforts, Bartkowiak was named to the all-tournament squad.
