Denver, Colo. — 23rd-ranked Regis defeated its fourth-ranked team of the season with a 3-1 win against cross-town rival and No. 14 Metro State.
Regis (9-6) led in set one 12-11 before Metro State (8-5) before Metro State went on a 7-2 run to take a 18-14 lead and never looked back in the 25-19 win.
The Roadrunners led 15-10 in set two before the Rangers went on a 9-1 run highlighted by two kills each by Caitlin McDonnell and Gina Morgan. MSUD battled back to tie the game at 20 and took a 24-23 lead before Katie Klein put down a kill to knot it at 24. The two teams went back and forth and with the score tied at 20 the dynamic duo of Klein and Caitie Breaux finished it off with back-to-back kills for the 31-29 win.
The Rangers kept on the peddle and, with the score tied at 19, scored three consecutive points on three Metro State errors. Following a timeout by the Roadrunners, they got kills from Alysa Heath and Amy Wong to close within one at 22-21. A kill by Klein and two more by McDonnell gave the Rangers the 25-21 win.
With the score tied at 12 in set four, Regis ran off nine consecutive points. Five came off of Metro State errors and two came from the right hand of Breaux. RU held off the Roadrunners late and took the match from Metro State with a 25-19 win.
There were 40 ties total in the match and 17 lead changes which included 16 ties each in the second and third sets. The Rangers outhit the home team .214 to .185 and improve to 7-0 when hitting .200 or better.
Four Rangers were in double figures in kills highlighted by McDonnell’s career-high 17 kills on 30 attempts. She had just two errors and hit .500 for the match. Breaux led the Rangers with 18 kills and also had 12 digs. Klein put down 12 kills with Morgan supplying 10.
Lauren Flanagan led the way with four blocks, while Morgan and Jaclyn Williamson added three. Williamson was the team leader once again with 51 set assists and 10 digs. Sage Martinson led the Rangers with 19 digs while Rebecca Sponcil collected 13 digs.
