No. 12 UW-Whitewater can't hold on, loses to rival in five-set battle
La Crosse, Wi. -- Wisconsin-La Crosse earned a 3-2 (24-26, 15-25, 30-28, 25-12, 15-12) victory against 12th-ranked UW-Whitewater Wednesday in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, who snapped a three-match losing streak to the Warhawks, improve to 9-8 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC while the Warhawks drop to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
UW-L led 24-22 in the first set, but UW-Whitewater came back to score the final four points to earn the 26-24 victory. The Eagles trailed 16-13 in set two, but the Warhawks finished with a 9-2 run.
UW-Whitewater led 21-18 in set three, but UW-L came back to tie it 25-25 and went on for the 30-25 win. The Eagles quickly raced out to leads of 8-3 and 12-4 in set four before winning 25-12.
The fifth set was tied 3-3, but UW-L went on a 6-1 run to lead 9-4. The Eagles led 10-5 before the Warhawks scored the next five points to tie the set. UW-L scored the next two points to lead 12-10, but UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 13-12. The Eagles then scored the final two points to earn the victory.
Leah Putzier led UW-L with 16 kills while Crystal Ziegler finished with 13 and Lauren Probst 10. Cassie Raduka recorded 29 assists while Chantel York had 22. The Eagles hit .210 overall. including .409 (10 kills, one error, 22 attempts) in set four and .333 (12 kills, three errors, 27 attempts) in the fifth set.
Ziegler recorded a match-high 22 digs for UW-L with Katie Kaufman finishing with 16 and Putzier 13. The Eagles had 8.0 team blocks.
Leanna Lillge led UW-Whitewater with 13 kills with Ariel Johnston recording 11. Kim Frei had 32 assists as the Warhawks hit .121 overall.
