Northwestern (Minn.) takes down UW-Stevens Point in five-set contest
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Northwestern (Minn.) overcame a 7-4 deficit in the fifth set to win its first NCAA tournament match, handing \UW-Stevens Point a 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20,15-12) loss. The NCAA win is a first for any of Northwestern's 18 varsity athletics teams.
Kendra Korporal had 19 kills and a .268 attacking percentage behind 55 assists from Krista Stoltz, who led the Eagles to a .227 attacking percentage.
Northwestern's seniors had a major impact late in the match, with Courtney Jonas awarding an honor call to Stevens Point at 11-9 in the fifth set. Katelyn Kostek then came through with three digs in a row in NWC's 13th point, which led to consecutive attacking errors by the Pointers.
Lizzy Potratz had a match-high 24 digs, followed by 20 digs from Kostek and 18 from Bertsch. Jonas and Potratz each had four blocks, while Tija Rudzitis' two solo blocks propelled her to five for the match.
The win, which moved Northwestern to 27-8 overall, was the Eagles' first against a ranked team this season.
