Puget Sound sweeps Chapman in Round 2 of NCAA tournament
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Jackie Harvey's 14 kills and nine team blocks led Puget Sound past Chapman in three sets on Saturday at the Gilbert Center. With the win, the Loggers (21-5) advance to Sunday's regional championship match.
Harvey tallied a match-high 14 kills and got her hands on four total blocks to lead the Loggers. Jenni Brehove ended the match with 40 assists and Christina Chun contributed 20 digs to the cause.
The Loggers started hot as they built an early 6-1 lead. The Panthers (24-7) fought back to take a 10-8 lead. However, the Loggers made another run to take control of the set and eventually won 25-18 on a kill from Nicolette Reynaud.
Chapman jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the second set, but Reynaud later tied the set at 12 with another one of her seven kills. From then on, it was a back and forth battle with the Loggers mainly playing one point behind the second-seeded Panthers.
The Loggers took their first lead of the set on a service ace from Christina Chun, who had four service aces to go along with her 20 digs. Chapman quickly reclaimed the lead and led by as much as three. Facing set point and down two points, Harvey slammed down a kill and assisted Kristin Best on a block to tie the match at 24. The teams then traded blows until Marissa Florant pounded back-to-back kills to take the set 28-26 for the Loggers. Florant had five of her nine kills in the set.
A pair of Chun aces early in the third set keyed a 6-4 Logger lead but Chapman refused to go down quietly. The Panthers tied the set up at 8 and then at 9 before the Loggers used back-to-back blocks from Emily Convery and Brehove to take a 12-9 lead.
Kate Ferrin gave Chapman its first and only lead of the set with one of her 13 kills at 14-13 in the final set. Ashleigh Gideon also had 13 kills for the Panthers. However, the Loggers quickly tied the match at 15. They pulled away late in the match with a 24-20 lead. Chapman slammed down one more kill before a serve into the net that ended the match and boosted the Loggers into the regional championship match.
Seven different Loggers had at least one block assist to tally nine team blocks. Harvey and Reynaud led the effort with four. Harvey also added 16 digs in the effort. The Loggers also had 10 service aces in the sweep as a team while recording just three serving errors.
