TAMPA, Fla. — Christian Brothers won its first NCAA tournament match in program history on Thursday as it upset second-seeded West Florida in four sets.
The Lady Bucs (21-12) scored seven of the final nine points to win 25-22 after trailing as late as 21-18 against UWF (26-8).
In the second set, Christian Brothers stormed to a 19-8 lead and held on to win 25-22 to take control of the match.
The Argos won the third set 25-18, but the Lady Bucs responded in the fourth set, building a 13-7 lead and surviving a late UWF rally to win 25-17.
Hannah Kurtz pounded 13 kills to lead the Lady Bucs’ offense, while Hailey Gillis racked up 11. Lizzie McLean hit .529 with nine kills. Kelsey Miles added 14 digs to her match-best 39 assists, while Kristina Headrick added 20 digs. Lauren South and Corinne Doder tacked on 11 digs each.
Alecia Stewart recorded nine block assists, the most for CBU in a match this season, and the Lady Bucs’ 13 blocks as a team marked their highest total since 2010.
Jenny Bellairs paced UWF with 14 kills, and Lindsay Homme added 12. KC Dobbins had 30 assists and Colleen Starrs notched 20 digs.
The Lady Bucs advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament on Friday against third-seeded Palm Beach Atlantic.
