Upperclassmen attackers bring the heat to start Cal's season 2-0
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Lead by junior Collin Smith's eight goals in two matches, No. 3 Cal has started off the 2012 season 2-0 with victories against No. 20 St. Francis (16-3) and No. 13 Princeton (16-4) Friday at the Princeton Invitational.
Smith paced Cal by scoring four goals in each of Friday’s victories, and added four steals as the Bears outscored their eastern opponents, 32-7. Senior captain Marin Balarin was also a top performer, scoring three goals apiece against St. Francis and Princeton. In all, 11 different players scored for the Bears in the two contests.
Cal was paced by senior goalie and team captain Justin Parsons as well. Parson had nine saves in three periods versus the Terriers, and notched six saves in three quarters versus the Tigers.
Other notable performances for the Bears Friday were sophomore Aleksa Saponjic, a bronze medalist with Serbia at the 2012 London Olympics, dishing out six assists; while junior Hunter Gettlefinger finished with five steals in the two matches.
