No. 9 Long Beach State hands No. 15 Navy its first loss of the season
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Ninth-ranked Long Beach State led the entire game and shut out Navy in the fourth quarter to thwart any chance of a comeback as the 49ers toppled the Midshipmen 15-7 on Thursday in Long Beach.
The loss ended Navy's season-opening 12-game winning streak and dropped the Midshipmen to 12-1, while Long Beach State improved to 10-1 overall.
Dan Matulis led the 49ers (10-1) with four goals. Matulis has now scored multiple goals in 10 of LBSU's 11 games. Devin Mefford added a season-high three goals, while Spencer White chipped in three as well. Milos Vrzic found the net twice to help LBSU to its fourth consecutive win.
Balint Meszaros recorded 13 saves for the 49ers to push his total to 106 for the season.
Paul Pedrotty, Sean McDonald and Thomas Patterson all scored twice for Navy, while Jesse Walker added one goal. Tyler Barker stopped 10 shots in goal for the Midshipmen.
Navy trailed 4-2 after one quarter, but was able to trim the lead to 4-3 midway through the second quarter on a Sean McDonald tally with 4:04 left before halftime. However, the 49ers closed the half on a 3-1 spurt to grab a 7-4 halftime advantage.
Each time Long Beach State pushed the lead to four goals, the Midshipmen were able to counter with goals of their own to cut the margin back to three goals, the last time being at 10-7 on a Thomas Patterson goal with 3:03 left in the third quarter. However, Long Beach State scored a pair of goals in a 25-second span late in the stanza to grab a 12-7 lead, then tallied three more in the fourth period for the 15-7 margin. The 49ers outscored Navy 5-0 over the last nine minutes of the game.
