Top-ranked Trojans continue winning streak by topping No. 8 UC Irvine
IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 1 USC kept its undefeated 2012 record intact with a decisive MPSF win at No. 8 UC Irvine on Thursday. In the Trojans' ninth consecutive game away from home, USC took control in the first half, allowing just three goals by halftime while Kostas Genidounias led USC with a hat trick at the half on his way to a four-goal day in an eventual 18-7 USC win against the Anteaters. USC improves to 18-0 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play with the win.
Jeremy Davie started it up for the Trojans with a score on USC's first possession of the game, and fellow Aussie Mace Rapsey added to the count soon after.
UC Irvine would close the gap to 2-1, but the Trojans plugged in scores from Kostas Genidounias, Matt Burton and Marc Vonderweidt to one goal from the Anteaters to take a 5-2 lead into the second period of play. Only one UCI goal would make it through the Trojan defense in the second, while Michael Rosenthal and Zach Lucas got in on the the scoring action to go with two more apiece from Genidounias and Nikola Vavic in that frame for a daunting 11-3 USC halftime advantage.
In the third, it was Rex Butler and Stephen Siri's turn to blast a pair apiece to help USC outpace the Anteaters to the tune of a 15-6 lead entering the fourth. There, the Trojans worked even farther ahead on Genidounias' fourth of the night, and another from Lucas and Vonderwiedt as USC wrapped up an 18-7 road win against UC Irvine.
