BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 9 Long Beach State upset No. 5 California 11-10 for its first win since 2001 against the Golden Bears Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. Three players scored multiple goals for Long Beach State.
It was the Bears’ sixth one-goal loss of the season and 10th one-goal loss in the past two years. Cal has also fallen three times in overtime this year.
The 49ers (19-4, 1-1 MPSF) started the game well, holding the Bears (10-7, 1-2 MPSF) scoreless in the first period to lead 2-0.
Cal stormed back with five goals in the second period behind the shooting of Aleksa Saponjic, who finished with five goals, to take the 5-4 lead heading into the half.
Long Beach State rallied back with a 5-2 run of its own in the third period to go up 9-7 coming into the final period. The Golden Bears tried to come back in the fourth, outscoring the 49ers 3-2. Sophomore Saponjic scored his fifth goal of the match with 36 seconds left in the contest to get Cal within 11-10, but but the Golden Bears fell short in the effort.
Cal did have a final possession with six seconds left on the clock, but sophomore goalie Jon Sibley’s pass into two meters was knocked away by the 49ers’ Spencer White.
Milos Vrzic led Long Beach State’s offense, tying his season-high with three goals, while Nick Rascon and Zacchary Kappos each chipped in with a pair of goals.
Balint Meszaros recorded 11 saves in the win to push his total to 206 saves on the season.
