Smith’s five goals lead No. 6 Cal to 12-9 upset of No. 4 Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. — Led by junior standout Collin Smith’s five goals and a pair of goals from sophomore Blake Kelly, No. 6 Cal upended No. 4 Pepperdine 12-9 on Friday in an MPSF match.

The Golden Bears’ scored consecutive conference win to improve to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in league play.

Smith leads Cal in scoring this season with 53 goals in 19 matches, including two goals Thursday in the Bears’ 12-10 win at UC Irvine.

Cal also had solid efforts Friday from sophomore Aleksa Saponjic, who led the Bears with three assists, and junior Giacomo Cupido with three steals.

Sophomore goalie Jon Sibley finished with six saves, all in the second half, including blocking a Waves’ five-meter penalty shot.

“Our team came out strong in the first period and set the tempo of the match,” Cal coach Kirk Everist said. “Our man up offense and our man down defense was solid again, which we will need to continue as we move toward the conference tournament.”
