St. Francis (N.Y.), Bucknell both advance to face off for Eastern title
No. 12 St. Francis (N.Y.) will play No. 15 Bucknell on Sunday for the 2012 Eastern Championship after defeating No. 17 Mercyhurst 12-11 Saturday at Princeton. The winner will represent the east coast at the championship tournament, which will be held on Dec. 1 at USC.
The Terriers, who trailed Navy by three goals in the tournament opener on Friday, showed poise as they were behind 9-5 after the Lakers scored a power-play goal with 2:45 left in the third quarter.
St. Francis re-grouped and went on a 6-1 run to take the lead for good, jumping up to 11-10 after junior Bosko Stankovic fired a no-look backhander into the left corner of the net with two minutes remaining in the contest.
Senior Marko Gencic scored on a penalty shot with just over a minute remaining to give the Terriers a 12-10 lead. It was his fifth goal of the match.
The Lakers pulled within 12-11 with 55 seconds left and then had a final possession after a failed shot attempt by the Terriers. But SFC goalkeeper Igor Mladenovic made a stop to his right as the Lakers' fired a shot that was ticketed for the right-corner of the net with two seconds remaining.
Vuk Vujosevic added four goals for the Terriers.
Bucknell advanced to the Eastern Championship title game with a 7-6 victory against No. 20 and host Princeton. Freshman Stefan Aleksic scored the game-winning goal with 1:48 remaining. The Bison will be making their first appearance in the title game since 1993.
