All-American Wise scores five goals for No. 9 UC Irvine

STOCKTON, Calif. -- Senior Balazs Erdelyi tallied seven goals as No. 5 Pacific cruised to a 19-7 win against No. 18 Santa Clara in the men's water polo season opener Saturday.
Sophomore Kristian Laczkovics and junior Alex Obert each added three goals while senior Alex Malkis made 13 saves in net. Redshirt senior Balazs Szabo picked up two goals, while junior Sean Grady, redshirt sophomore Casey Fleming and freshman Ben Stevenson each scored once.
The reigning national player of the year started his senior season where he left off in his junior campaign as Erdelyi, the 2012 Peter J. Cutino Award winner, posted three goals in the first quarter. He opened the scoring at the 4:40 mark, but Santa Clara quickly struck back with a goal from Casidhe McClone just 25 seconds later.
Pacific locked down its defense in the second half, shutting out Santa Clara in the third quarter. Goals by Olivera, Flemming and a pair from Erdelyi gave the Tigers a 15-5 lead after three, and the Tigers coasted home as Laczkovics tallied twice, and Erdelyi and Szabo each found the back of the net.
No. 6 Long Beach State 10, Air Force 8
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- No. 6 Long Beach State opened up the 2013 campaign with a victory, defeating No. 12 Air Force 10-8 in the opening match of the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego. Sophomore Nolan McConnell led the 49ers with four goals, while Pavo Ljepopio made eight saves in his debut for Long Beach State.
Air Force (0-1) was able to get on the board first, but the teams remained tied after the first quarter 1-1.
The fourth quarter belonged to Long Beach State, as Vrzic gave the 49ers the lead once more, and after an equalizer from the Falcons, McConnell put Long Beach State up for good with 2:43 remaining. With an extra man, the 49ers put across an insurance goal with 28 seconds remaining and closed out the 10-8 victory.
No. 6 Long Beach State 10, Cal Lutheran 4
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- No. 6 Long Beach State finished the first day of the regular season 2-0 after a 10-4 victory against Cal Lutheran at the Triton Invitational in San Diego. Senior Carter Taylor led the 49ers with three goals, including two in the first quarter.
Sophomore Devin Mefford also had three goals for Long Beach State, as the 49ers took an early lead against Cal Lutheran (0-2) and never looked back. Long Beach State (2-0) took a 1-0 lead with 6:51 remaining in the first period, and both Mefford and Taylor scored after that goal to pace the 49ers to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.
Another goal from Taylor gave the 49ers a 7-0 lead against CLU before the Kingsmen scored with 5:09 in the third period to break the shutout. The 49ers scored three more goals from that point, however, while CLU scored two final goals in the fourth quarter to account for the final tally.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Srdjan Mihaljevic Era got off to a great start as the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers won their season-opener, defeating Harvard 10-7 on Saturday morning at Brown.
Freshman Lazar Komadinic scored a match-high four goals in his Terriers' debut and classmate Ilija Djuretic added two winners and seven steals.
Vuk Vujosevic, Liam Veazey, Luka Vukomanovic, and Bosko Stankovic all found the back of the net for the defending Eastern Champions.
Senior goalie Igor Mladenovic was sensational as he turned away 22 Harvard attempts on goal.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior All-American Mitch Wise scored five goals as ninth-ranked UC Irvine opened its 2013 schedule with a 19-2 win against MIT in the Bruno Fall Classic in Providence, R.I., Saturday morning.
Wise scored two goals in the first quarter, two in the third and one in the fourth.
Bojan Hrlec added three goals while Chris Swieca, Pablo Carballo and Kyle Kittlitz scored a pair apiece.
Ten different players scored for the 'Eaters, who led 10-1 at halftime.
Dylan Hallman and Kale Rogers scored goals for the Engineers.
