LA JOLLA, Calif.  – The 19th-ranked UC San Diego women’s water polo team defeated 14th-ranked Hartwick by a 12-10 score on a rainy Thursday night at Canyonview Pool.  Sydney Gstettenbauer poured in six goals while Stephanie Bocian’s goal with 2:44 remaining clinched the win for the Tritons.  Ebey Sorenson made several saves down the stretch to preserve the win.  “This was a gutty performance tonight,” said head coach Larry Sanders.  “Sydney and Bosh had great games offensively and Ebey stepped up when we needed it,” continued Sanders. 

UCSD has now won four straight season opening games as the Tritons host the 16-team Triton Invitational this weekend.

The six goals in the 2009 season opener gives Gstettenbauer 13 goals in her last two season openers, after scoring seven times against Colorado State to kick off the 2008 year.

The Tritons led 5-3 after the first quarter as Gstettenbauer scored three times.  UCSD opened up an 8-5 lead with 2:16 remaining in the half as Gstettenbauer connected again. 

After UCSD held an 8-6 lead at halftime, Stephanie Heinrich scored at the 6:59 mark to give the Tritons back a three-goal lead.  Hartwick cut the deficit down to two goals on several occasions, including a the final score of the third period to begin the final quarter with the score UCSD 11-9.

Hartwick scored the opening goal of the fourth to come within 11-10 with 6:23 left.  The teams would exchange scoreless possessions until Bocian struck with her third score at the 2:44 mark and the 12-10 lead.  UCSD’s defense would turn away the Hawks and the Tritons were able to run out the clock.

UCSD faces Marist at 10:15a.m.  in its first game at the Triton Invitational on Saturday.
