ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 1 seed Stanford easily handled No. 8 seed Iona, 22-7, in quarterfinal action at the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship on Friday afternoon at Canham Natatorium.
The Cardinal and Gaels battled through the first period with eight different players combining for a 6-3 score after the opening stanza. Alyssa Lo was the lone Stanford player with two goals. Stanford extended the lead to 14-5 at the half thanks in part to four goals from Melissa Seideman. The Cardinal had their scoring barrage broken up only by a pair of offspeeds shot by Iona’s Mackenzie Mone and Sam Cody that found twine with 4:46 and three seconds, respectively, to go in the half.
Iona answered four Stanford goals in the third period with markers from Alyssa Turza and Cecilia Leonard. The Cardinal tacked on four more in the third to come within five markers of the NCAA record for scores in a game.
Stanford advances to face the victor of No. 4 seed Southern Cal and No. 5 seed UC Irvine at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Iona will take on the loser of that contest at 3 p.m. Saturday.
