ANN ARBOR, Mich. — UC-Irvine broke through with their first NCAA tournament win, 15-4, over eighth-seeded Iona.

The Anteaters used a strong defensive effort to keep the Gaels off the board for the first 13 minutes of the game, with the Gaels scoring their first goal with 2:37 left in the second quarter. The Gaels’ defense was equally game in the first half before Irvine outscored the Gaels 9-3 in the second half to distance themselves from the MAAC Champions.

Danielle Warde led UC-Irvine with five goals, including two in the fourth. Jessy Cardey had two goals while Katie Croghan, Devin Crothers, Cortney Collyer, Taylor Morrison, Kelsey Klatt, Hannah Croghan, Caitlin Haskell and Amy Riddering had one goal each.

Senior Maggie Wood and junior Mackenzie Mone each had two goals for the Gaels. Senior Kathleen Link made three saves in three quarters while freshman Marisa Gaynor made one save in the fourth.
