Cal improved to 12-2 on the season with the 8-3 win against San Jose State.

BERKELEY, Calif. — Junior Breda Vosters again paced Cal with three goals, and senior Elizabeth McLaren and junior Kirstn Mase added two goals apiece as the Golden Bears defeated visiting San Jose State 8-3 Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal improved to 12-2 overall and is 2-0 in MPSF play. The Spartans fell to 6-5 and 0-2 in league play.

Vosters, the Bears’ leading scorer with 25 goals in 12 matches, tallied all her three goals in the first period as Cal jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first eight minutes. The Bears extended their lead to 6-1 at halftime on goals by Mase, McLaren and junior Dana Ochsner, and then cruised to the 8-3 victory. Mase and McLaren scored goals for Cal in the second half.

Junior goalie Lindsay Dorst recorded five saves in the first half, and freshman goalie Savanna Smith registered five goals in the second half. San Jose State goalie Meagan Minson had 12 saves on the day.

“San Jose State was in a difficult spot,” said Cal coach Richard Corso. “For our team, the emphasis has been on defense since the Stanford Tournament [in which the Bears finished 2-2], and we made it tough on them to score. They [the Spartans] had some key players out with injuries, so we were able to limit them offensively.”
