Newberry (SC) College, ranked No 1 in the East Region, holds a 16-point lead over No. 2 Pitt-Johnstown after Friday’s opening day of the 2010 Super Region I Wrestling Tournament in the Sports Center. Both Newberry and Pitt-Johnstown have all 10 of their wrestlers alive in the tournament.
Newberry leads with 69.5 team points and eight wrestlers in the semifinals, while the Mountain Cats have 49.5 points, with five wrestlers in the semifinals and five in the quarterfinals of the wrestlebacks.
Gannon University stands in third place with 45 points and eight wrestlers still in the tournament, while Kutztown University, which also has eight wrestlers alive, is fourth with 41.5 points in the 15-team field.
Wrestling continues on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and the consolation semifinals. The finals, consolation finals, fifth/sixth-place matches and true fourth matches are scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
