Dutch place three in Menlo Invitational
Central College Athletics
ATHERTON, CALIF.—Central College was the only NCAA Division III squad in the Menlo (Calif.) Invitational Sunday, but the Dutch still produced three placewinners.
Ted Dirkx (senior, Alleman, North Polk HS) was third at 285 pounds while Reid Imerman (junior, Guthrie Center) and Dan Gordon (junior, Anchorage, Alaska, Diamond HS) were fourth at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively.
“All three had their best tournament of the year,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “I’m especially proud of Ted Dirkx. He’s a senior who has more than paid his dues. This was far and away his best college tournament.”
Dirkx prevailed in a hard-fought match against a foe from San Francisco State to claim third.
Van Kley said several other Dutch wrestlers performed well in the tourney, which included three nationally ranked NAIA schools, several Division II squads and a pair of Division I opponents. Some 30 Central wrestlers were entered.
“It was by far the toughest tournament we’ve been in this year,” Van Kley said. “But the kids competed pretty well.
“We’re improving each and every week. The kids are enjoying something different, both on the mat and with the sightseeing we’re doing.”
