ERIE, Pa. — No. 14 Gannon fell to Kutztown 22-12 on Saturday afternoon at the Hammermill Center. The Golden Knights earned wins in four bouts but saw the Golden Bears earn victories in each of the final three matches to win by 10 points.
Jose Matos won a closely contested bout at 125 pounds by a 7-3 margin in the second sudden victory overtime period. The junior earned a takedown with seven seconds remaining, adding two near-fall points to account for the final score.
Kutztown earned wins in the next three bouts, one by major decision, to take a 10-3 lead. Sam Brehm added three points for Gannon with an 8-3 win against Kutztown’s Anthony Frost. Brehm won the 157 pound bout with three takedowns.
Zack McKendree and Tony Petrella each remain undefeated in dual meets, winning their eighth and seventh bouts of the season, respectively. McKendree grabbed his 25th victory of the year with a 6-4 win. Looking for a major decision, Petrella took down Zach Marlatt six times but couldn’t extend the margin far enough, winning by a 15-11 score.
Petrella’s win gave Gannon a 12-10 lead, but the Golden Bears rallied to win the final three matches to pull away.
