Virginia ties program wins record
Cavs grab bonus points in five of eight victories
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia matched its program record for dual wins in a season with a 38-7 victory at George Mason on Thursday evening at RAC Gym in Fairfax, Va. UVa improved to 18-7 with the triumph, matching the 2008 team's win total. Derek Valenti and Jack Danilkowicz each recorded pins for the Cavaliers as UVa picked up bonus points in five of its eight wins.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead when Matt Snyder won by forfeit at 125 pounds. UVa gained another six points at 133 pounds when Joe Spisak won when John Delgado forfeited after Spisak took an 11-1 lead.
The Patriots (0-20) got a win at 141 pounds when Denny Herndon picked up a major decision 15-6 against UVa's Dave Ebbott.
Valenti put the Cavaliers back on the winning track, pinning Brandon Bucher with four seconds remaining in the 149-pound bout en route to his ninth consecutive victory. Bucher was an NCAA Championships qualifier at 149 last season. Valenti upped his record to 21-11 this season and recorded his first pin of the year.
The Cavaliers then won by decision at both 157 and 165 pounds. At 157 Shawn Harris scored a 7-2 win against GMU's Jaaziah Bethea before Jedd Moore slipped past Jaaziah Bethea 5-4 at 165.
At 174 pounds, fourth-ranked Chris Henrich easily dispatched of Greg Scott with a 20-5 technical fall. Henrich needed less than two full periods to clinch the tech fall as he won his 15th consecutive match and improved to 29-1 this season.
Billy Coggins filled in at 184 pounds and dropped a 6-1 decision to Bagna Tovuuja, but Stephen Doty followed with a 7-2 win against James Webb at 197 and Danilkowicz finished things with a quick pin of Hunter Manspile in the heavyweight match.
