No. 2 UW-La Crosse tops No. 20 Luther
Sheley wins by major decision to help lead the Eagles
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Wisconsin-La Crosse improved to 9-1 on the season with a 24-21 victory against Luther (Iowa) Wednesday night in the Mitchell Hall Field House. The second-ranked Eagles earned their sixth consecutive win against the No. 20 Luther. Luther drops to 1-1 on the season.
The Norse took a 5-0 lead as Daniel Mendoza won by technical fall (18-3) against the Eagles' Joey Nelson at 125 pounds. Mendoza is now 7-0 on the year. UW-L took the next two matches to lead 10-5. Adam Sheley, ranked second at 133 pounds, won by major decision (11-1) against Luther's Evan Obert and Bebeto Yewah, top-ranked at 141, earned a win by fall (1:20) against Kyle Windquist to give UW-L a 10-5 lead.
Sheley is now 11-3 on the year while Yewah improved to 10-0.
Luther's Stephan De La Cruz won by injury default against UW-L's Brady Schrupp at 149 to give the Norse an 11-10 advantage, but the Eagles captured the next four matches to take a 24-11 lead.
JR Lewis won by major decision (14-4) against Eric Moreno at 157 pounds; Kevin O'Brien defeated Dale Lewis by decision (6-3) at 165; Mike Schmitz won by decision (10-4) against Jarid Groth at 174 and Grant Miller beat Nick Pearch by major decision (14-5) at 184. Schmitz is currently ranked first in the country at 174 pounds.
The Norse' Trent Flegel won by fall (1:52) against the Eagles' Evan Sinram to cut UW-L's lead to 24-17. Luther's Jacob Johnson finshed the dual with a win by major decision (13-1) against Zach Tooley at 285 pounds.
