COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — No. 7 SUNY Cortland advanced to the semifinals of the 20-team Budd Whitehill Duals with three victories during the opening day of the two-day tournament. The top-seeded Red Dragons defeated John Carroll 26-15, Williams 37-9, before capping the day with a 21-16 victory against eighth-seeded and 25th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals.
Cortland (13-0) will face 22nd-ranked and fifth-seeded Springfield in the semifinals on Saturday morning. The other semifinal match features 12th-ranked and third-seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater versus 24th-ranked and seventh-seeded Ohio Northern. The tournament features 10 schools ranked in the top 30 nationally in Division III.
Cortland defeated John Carroll behind pins from Sean Kempf at 133 pounds and Andre Berry at 149 pounds and major decisions by Brian Bistis at 141 pounds and Jared Myhrberg at 197 pounds. The Red Dragons also picked up decisions from Jonathan Conroy at 165 pounds and Corey James at 285 pounds.
The Red Dragons won seven out of 10 matches in their victory against Williams. Myhrberg pinned his opponent at 197 pounds, James Ondris won by an 18-5 major decision at 174 pounds and Bistis was a 3-2 winner at 141 pounds. The other four Cortland wins came via forfeit for Jared Lemke at 125 pounds, Berry at 157 pounds, Justin Signorelli at 165 pounds and Carl Korpi at 184 pounds.
In the quarterfinals, Wisconsin-Stevens Point took an early 7-0 lead after two matches. Cortland responded with a 4-3 decision by Bistis at 141 pounds and a pin by Berry in 1:30 at 149 pounds to go ahead 9-7. Down 10-9, the Red Dragons regained the lead when Conroy won by injury default at 165 pounds. The Pointers won at 174 pounds to cut Cortland’s lead to 15-13, but the Red Dragons clinched the victory with 8-2 wins by Korpi at 184 pounds and Myhrberg at 197 pounds.
