JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — No. 2 Newberry finished an undefeated weekend at the Super Region I Duals with a 29-9 win against No. 8 Mercyhurst in the UPJ Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry moved to 14-1 in duals on the season and defeated its second top-10 opponent in five days. It was the fourth dual win in less than 24 hours for the Wolves.

At 125 pounds, Travis Laxton used a series of takedowns and nearfalls in the first and second periods to establish dominance on the way to a 14-5 major decision against Ryan Bohince. The win staked the Wolves to an early 4-0 lead.
Jon Cronin then found himself on the wrong end of a sudden-victory match at 133 pounds. Mercyhurst’s Kody Young scored a takedown for a 6-4 victory and narrowed the Wolves’ lead to 4-3.
Another hotly contested bout came at 141 pounds as No. 6 BJ Young scored a takedown nine seconds into the first sudden-victory period for a 5-3 decision against Jeremy Landowski, and gave Newberry a 7-3 advantage.
No. 8 Deral Brown remained undefeated in dual action on the season with a 14-6 major decision against Michael Griffith at 149 pounds to extend the Newberry lead to 11-3.
Davis Bagwell suffered a 7-0 loss by decision to No. 6 Jordan Shields, narrowing the Wolves’ lead to 11-6 at the halfway point of the dual. No. 6 Sean Byrnes then racked up more than five minutes of riding time in the 165-pound bout on the way to a 9-2 decision against Adam Lamancusa to make it a 14-6 lead.
A quick first period move by No. 7 Travis Sheehy led to a pin at the 2:19 mark against August Mizia, pushing the lead to 20-6.
Freshman Jared Holliday clinched the dual victory for the Wolves at 184 pounds with a victory by injury default in the first period. After winning by forfeit twice earlier in the day, Zach Anderson finally got his chance to wrestle an opponent at 197 pounds. The bout turned out to be the third overtime match of the dual, with Anderson earning a takedown 28 seconds into the first sudden victory for a 3-1 decision which pushed Newberry’s lead to 29-6.
Newberry’s weekend came to a conclusion with a matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers in the heavyweight division. No. 4 Jake Elkins took on No. 7 Fred Hale, who grabbed a reversal with 20 seconds left to tie the match. Hale then claimed a 9-8 decision with the riding-time advantage.
Earlier in the day, the Wolves earned a 37-10 win against Shippensburg and a 40-6 victory against Seton Hill.
