ST. CLOUD, Minn. — No. 1 St. Cloud State posted a 19-12 victory against No. 3 Upper Iowa on Sunday. The victory improved SCSU’s record to 20-0 this season, which set a team record for wins in a single season.
The previous record of 19 wins was set during the 2010-11 season, and the Huskies will conclude the dual-meet schedule of the 2011-12 season with a match at NSIC rival Minnesota State on Feb. 16.
Before a big crowd on Alumni/Senior Day in Halenbeck Hall, the match against opened at 197 pounds. The Peacocks’ fourth-ranked Carl Broghammer scored a 1-0 win against SCSU’s Chris Brassell.
At 285 pounds, No. 1-ranked Jake Kahnke of SCSU tied the match for the Huskies with a 2-0 decision against No. 6-ranked Zach Rosol of UIU.
The Peacocks rebounded at the lower weights with a victory at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, before the Huskies made it 9-6 with a 9-6 win by Jay Hildreth against UIU’s Duane Richardson at 141.
Junior Jacob D. Horn returned to the mats against UIU’s Jordan Rinken after an injury layoff. Horn got right back on track in the match with a big 5-2 victory at 149 pounds for SCSU. His victory tied the match at 9-9.
At 157-pounds, Josh Howk lost an 8-2 decision to Winston Robbins of UIU that made the tally 12-9 in favor of UIU.
The Huskies sealed the deal with three consecutive wins at 165, 174 and 184 pounds. No. 1-ranked Tad Merritt started the ball rolling with a 16-9 victory at 165-pounds against UIU’s Blake Sorensen.
At 174 pounds No. 3 Shamus O’Grady also returned to the mats after an injury layoff on Sunday. O’Grady looked sharp in his 6-3 victory against No. 6 Wade Gobin of UIU. To finish the match, senior Derek Skala carded an impressive 15-5 major decison win against No. 4 Mitch Schultz of UIU at 184 pounds.
