NEWBERRY, S.C. — No. 5 Newberry used two upsets against nationally-ranked wrestlers to earn a 25-9 victory against No. 8 Findlay in the second session of the sixth annual Newberry Duals in Eleazer Arena on Saturday. Newberry moves to 4-0 on the season with the win.
Jeff Vesta got the dual started at 125 lbs. with a 4-3 win against No. 3 Ben Sergent in the second tiebreaker period to stake the Wolves out to a 3-0 lead. Nick Lankford earned a 6-0 decision against Shane Troyer at 133 lbs. to put Newberry up 6-0.
No. 2 B.J. Young put up a solid performance at 141 lbs. with an 11-0 decision against Joey White, and Deral Brown cruised to an 18-6 major decision against Jan Ulinski to push the lead to 14-0.
Seiji Borja suffered Newberry’s first loss of the day at 157 lbs., when Jordan Cowell was awarded a late takedown to earn a 9-8 decision.
Blake Ridenour offered up one of the best performances of the day at 165 lbs., upsetting No. 2 Mason True in shutout fashion with a 7-0 decision.
At 174 lbs., Travis Sheehy made sure the bout was never within reach with a 17-0 technical fall against Alec Bissel at the end of the second period.
Mitch Brown grappled valiantly at 184 lbs. against No. 1 Adam Walters, but the top-ranked Roughneck eked out a 5-4 decision.
Joey Grisko earned a 4-2 decision against Ashton Brown at 197 lbs. and Findlay’s Andrew Tumlin closed out the dual with a 5-3 decision at heavyweight against Braden Carter.
Newberry swept the meet with a 4-0 record for the day.
