DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Delaware Valley picked up wins in the final three weight classes, including two by fall, as the eighth-ranked Aggies turned a 12-11 deficit into a 26-12 home triumph against No. 13 Ithaca on Saturday.
Delaware Valley improved to 7-2 and guaranteed itself a non-losing season for the 42nd time in the last 43 years. The Bombers fell to 6-4 in dual meets.
The lead changed five times during the match. Ithaca earned a one-point advantage (12-11) following a bout at 174 pounds when second-ranked Jules Doliscar (25-1) registered a 5-1 decision against Dallas Winston (17-8).
It was all Aggies after that, starting at 184 when a takedown and a pair of reversals left Delaware Valley’s Connor Gabriel with a 4-2 lead against Dan Glinko after the first period. He was still up 6-4 at the end of two when Glinko got a takedown early in the third to tie it. Gabriel (11-8) picked up the escape and held Glinko (17-9) off for the 7-6 decision and a 14-12 Aggie advantage.
Third-ranked Aaron Karns then hit the mat for Delaware Valley at 197 and he built a 9-0 lead before pinning Ricky Dracup (12-9) with 1:06 remaining in the match. The win improved Karns to 22-3 on the year and it sealed the win for the Aggies.
Heavyweight Mike Boardman (11-9) then provided extra cushion for Delaware Valley as he dropped Cris Ramirez (11-10) in just 64 seconds for the 26-12 final.
The match began at 125 pounds where returning All-American Charlie Frankel (11-5) took on third-ranked Ricky Gomez (19-2) from Ithaca. Gomez used an escape and a takedown in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Frankel got a takedown in the third and then Gomez got loose, but he was unable to get the tying takedown and Gomez walked away with the 4-2 decision.
The Bombers increased their lead with an 8-3 decision by Alex Gomez (11-4) against Pat Davis (10-11) at 133. However, the Aggies got three back at 141 pounds as Dale Fava (3-3) recorded a first-period takedown and went on to a 4-1 triumph against Dominick Giacolone (6-5).
The teams then traded victories at 149 and 157 thanks to nationally-ranked wrestlers. At 149, Delaware Valley’s Emmanuel Ajagbe, ranked fourth, earned four points for his squad as he dominated Kevin Collins (15-5) with five takedowns and two near falls, en route to a 17-5 major decision. The victory improved him to 24-2 on the year.
At 157, Ithaca’s Derek Brenon, ranked seventh, upped his mark to 18-3 with a 5-2 decision against James Dugan (20-13). It gave the Bomber a 9-7 lead halfway through the match. Nick Della Fera (18-14) picked up four points for the Aggies at 165 as he used three takedowns, an escape and riding time for an 8-0 blanking of Jake Buczewski (6-9).
