Fletcher

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- Senior center fielder Whitney Fletcher's triple in the bottom of the 13th inning scored Heather Pearson for the game-winning run as UAB defeated UCLA 3-2 at Ulmer Stadium to win the NCAA Softball Louisville Regional and advance to next weekend's super regionals.

The Blazers, who lost to the Bruins (4-1) earlier in the day to set up the deciding game, outlasted their Pac-12 opponent in a marathon contest that lasted nearly four and a half hours.

With the win, the Blazers (40-17) posted their first 40-win season in program history, while UCLA ended its season at 40-20.

UAB now advances to the NCAA Super Regionals in Gainesville, Fla. where it will face the No. 2-seeded Florida Gators.

"Going into the second game, I knew we didn't start off mentally strong," head coach Marla Townsend said. "It was just [Whitney Fletcher]. You could see she was not seeing the ball clearly at first. Right before her last at-bat, she said, 'I got it, coach. I am back.' And in that sixth at-bat, she was definitely back."

In the circle for the deciding game, Leigh Streetman (13-7) turned in a stellar performance as she picked up the win in relief, throwing 7.2 innings for starter Lauren Webster, allowing no earned runs and striking out seven.

"I am just so proud of the way Lauren Webster pitched a great game and Leigh Streetman came in and did outstanding too," Townsend said. "You have a team like UCLA, who has won a World Series get 16 hits to our four hits - that just shows how relentless we were. The crowd and our fans were just great. It is a great day to be a Blazer."

For UCLA, Jessica Hall (11-8) took the loss after throwing 11.1 innings and allowing each of UAB's four hits. The Bruins stranded 18 runners on base throughout the game while the Blazers only left eight.

In the deciding game, UAB scored first, as sophomore Heather Pearson reached on a fielder's choice and was brought home on a double to left center by senior third baseman Kate Armstrong.

UCLA tied the game at one with an RBI single to left with two outs in the top of the second.

Neither side plated a run until the 11th inning of action, as UCLA scored its second on a sacrifice fly to center field after loading the bases.

The Blazers kept the game alive after freshman shortstop Caitlin Attfield reached on an infield single to short, and was advanced to second when Pearson was hit by pitch. Attfield took third on a wild pitch, and was scored to tie the game at two on Fletcher's sacrifice fly to center field.

Streetman set UCLA down in order in the top of the 12th with a pop up to short and a pair of strikeouts, before UAB got the winning runner to third in the bottom, but she was caught out halfway to home on a failed squeeze play by sophomore Amy Dennis.

The Blazers got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 13th. UCLA reached with a leadoff single to the left side and the runner was advanced on a bunt single by leadoff hitter B.B. Bates. The Bruins drew a one-out walk to load the bases, but Streetman struck out the two batters, one swinging and the other looking, to get UAB out of the jam without allowing a run.

UAB led off the bottom of the 13th with the top of the order, as Attfield took first on a four-pitch walk. Pearson hit into a fielder's choice and Attfield was tagged at second for the first out of the frame, before Fletcher tripled to right center to end the game in the Blazers' favor and advanced the team to its first NCAA Super Regional in program history.

<![CDATA[Top-seeded Oklahoma makes quick work of Arkansas in Norman Regional]]>
Gascoigne

NORMAN, Okla. -- Top-seeded Oklahoma punched its ticket to the super regionals with a 14-1, five-inning win against Arkansas on Sunday afternoon in the Norman Regional. It's the fourth season in a row and the sixth time in the last seven years that the Sooners have advanced past the regional stage.

The Sooners (50-4), who won their three regional games by a combined score of 41-6, will face former Big 12 member Texas A&M in the super regionals next weekend.

"I'm very proud of this team and their performance [Sunday]," Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso said. "They came out ready to play. Our goal was to make it one game. That was our focus and our commitment, and we were locked in and ready to go. I'm very proud of them."

The Sooners tallied 11 hits in the win, but also took advantage of four Arkansas (36-20) errors. Of the team's 14 runs, only five were earned.

"I think that's what they see, is an opening," Gasso said. "The [Sooners are] a big momentum team. They won't say that they know they're good, but they know they're good. They love to pass the bat, or what we call pass the torch. They love to keep the inning alive and respond with two outs."

Oklahoma opened the scoring in the first inning when sophomore Lauren Chamberlain was hit by the opening pitch and then stole her team-leading 14th base of the season. Fellow sophomore Georgia Casey followed with a sharp single to left center to score Chamberlain.

Arkansas threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting two runners on second and third with no outs, but senior Keilani Ricketts came back with consecutive strikeouts. A walk filled the bases, but Ricketts then got Andrea Sullivan to ground out to Casey at second base for the final out.

Both teams put runners in scoring position in the second, but the Sooners left the bases loaded, while the Razorbacks stranded a runner on second.

The game turned in the third inning on a defensive miscue by Arkansas. With two outs and two on, sophomore Callie Parsons lifted a fly ball to right field that was dropped by Amanda Geile. The error allowed junior Brittany Williams and senior Jessica Shults to score to make it 3-0 for Oklahoma.

Senior Brianna Turang followed Parsons with a walk and Chamberlain delivered the big blow with a three-run home run to center field. It was her 27th this year and 57th of her career, passing former Sooner Amber Flores for second-most in OU career history.

"Softball is a game of momentum, and we know that," Chamberlain said. "As the season has been going on we've gotten better at knowing when we can capitalize on errors and knowing when the game changes. I think our aggressive style allows us to do that as well."

The Sooners kept the momentum in the third inning as senior pitcher Michelle Gascoigne came on in relief to stop a threat.

"It's something that I've done my whole career, and I prepare for it, especially going into these big weekends," Gascoigne said.. "Just knowing that Keilani [Ricketts] might need some help or even that we just might want to change things up a bit, so I really like the role of coming in to relieve."

Gascoigne ended with the win, throwing the final 2.1 innings. Her lone hit allowed was a home run, and she added three strikeouts to improve to 18-3.

Sophomore Shelby Pendley led off the inning with a solo home run to right center, her 20th of the season. Two batters later, Williams doubled to left center and Shults followed with a double of her own to make it 8-0.

Freshman Erin Miller came on to run for Shults and scored on the next batter as Destinee Martinez reached safely on a throwing error by Navarro at shortstop. Later in the frame, the bases were loaded with two outs, thanks to a single by junior Javen Henson and an intentional walk to Chamberlain. A fielding error by second baseman Sierra Bronkey allowed sophomore Georgia Casey to reach safely and score the 10th run of the game.

Pendley came to bat for the second time in the inning and delivered a single to center field to drive in two runs and make it 12-0.

After a solo home run by Arkansas' Devon Wallace in the top of the fourth, OU countered with a two-run homer from Henson. It was her first of the year and the 10th of her career.

<![CDATA[Arizona State advances to super regionals eliminating Georgia 2-0]]>
Escobedo

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Fourth ranked and fifth-seeded Arizona State (48-10) advanced to the super regionals of the NCAA softball tournament next weekend, after eliminating Georgia in a 2-0 decision in the NCAA Tempe Regional at Farrington Stadium on Sunday.

Dallas Escobedo (28-4) put forth yet another admirable effort, improving to 3-0 on the weekend behind another complete game, holding Georgia (40-21) scoreless for the second consecutive game. Escobedo gave up just three hits with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of play.

Starting pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson (8-6) took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up two runs in one inning of play. Georgia brought in Morgan Montemayor who finished off the final six innings with no runs scored.

The Sun Devils put two runs on the board in the first inning and that would prove to be the only offense they needed as Escobedo put the team on her back and carried them to an unblemished run through the Tempe Regional.

ASU drew first blood in the first as Alix Johnson reached on a walk and advanced on a stolen base. After a fly out by Cheyenne Coyle, Amber Freeman continued her torrid postseason with a high fly ball that dropped squarely in between the Georgia shortstop and center fielder and scored Johnson in the process.

Haley Steele followed that with a line drive double down the left field line that plated Freeman to give ASU the early 2-0 lead.

That would prove to be it for the scoring as Georgia replaced Wilkinson with Montemayor to start the second inning and the junior totally shut down the Sun Devils for the remainder of the game. Montemayor gave up just four hits with no walks and no runs in six inning of action.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Escobedo threw her best again, dominating the strike zone and controlling the game. The junior has now pitched 31 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run, the last coming in the third inning of ASU's May 9 victory over Oregon. In three games this weekend, Escobedo gave up just five hits.

<![CDATA[Renfroe helps Tennessee to third shutout of weekend and into super regionals]]>
Renfroe

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Madison Shipman had a two-run homer and drove in three and Ivy Renfroe fanned five in seven shutout innings as Tennessee punched its sixth trip to the NCAA super regionals with a 7-0 win against NC State on Sunday in Game 6 of the Knoxville Regional.

Renfroe helped Tennessee to its third shutout during the weekend as she and sister Ellen Renfroe combined for 23 scoreless innings to start the NCAA tournament.

Shipman finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and three runs while Ivy Renfroe let up just one hit on the day, a single up the middle to Lana Van Dyken in the third inning.

Raven Chavanne went 2-for-3 and scored twice, moving her career runs total to 242 - a new Tennessee career record. Chavanne broke the previous record of 241 held by Lindsay Schutlzer.

Tennessee scored two in the first, two in the second and three in the fourth and controlled the game from start to finish in the victory.

The Lady Vols jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chavanne opened the game with a leadoff single up the middle. Two batters later, Shipman ripped a hard-hit shot past the third baseman and Chavanne later advanced on a wild pitch to give UT runners on the corners. Kat Dotson sent a 1-2 pitch from Weiman through the right side to plate Chavanne. The Lady Vols then pulled off a double steal with Shipman coming home and Dotson moving to second to push the lead to 2-0.

In the top of the second, Tennessee grew its lead to 4-0 thanks to one big swing from Shipman. Chavanne hit a one-out double through the left side and advanced to third when Lauren Gibson grounded out to second. Shipman sent a 2-2 pitch sailing over the wall in right center for her 10th home run of the year and her first in over a month.

Tory Lewis led off the fourth inning with a double to right field, her first extra-base hit of the season. Chavanne moved her over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Shipman sent a pitch high down the left field line that landed between the shortstop and the left fielder for an RBI double. Two batters later, Cheyanne Tarango ripped a two-out, two-RBI single to right field to push UT's lead to 7-0. Chelsea Stanfield replaced Weiman in the circle to close out the inning.

The Wolfpack threatened in the bottom of the seventh, working two pinch-hit walks but Renfroe got the final two batters to pop out to end the threat.

<![CDATA[No. 6-seed Missouri earns spot in super regionals with win against Hofstra]]>
Thomas

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Senior Chelsea Thomas pitched a one-hitter to get No. 6-seeded Mizzou past Hofstra and into the NCAA Super Regionals with nine strikeouts in the 5-0 win on Sunday at University Field.

Thomas did not allow a walk through her seven innings to improve to 24-4 in her final Tiger campaign. Sophomore Kelsea Roth and senior Nicole Hudson homered in the game to pace Mizzou on the offensive side of the game.

The win improved Mizzou's overall record to 38-12, with Hofstra falling to 46-13 to conclude its 2013 season. The Tigers have advanced to the Super Regional round of the tournament for six consecutive seasons.

The Tigers pounced on the Pride in the bottom of the first inning with two outs on the scoreboard, with senior Nicole Hudson doubling to right center to get into scoring position. Junior Mackenzie Sykes then singled up the middle to drive around Hudson for the game's opening run and a 1-0 Tiger lead.

Roth's long ball gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead with one out in the bottom of the second. The blast to left center gave her the team-lead with 16 homers this season, until Hudson matched the total in the fifth with her two-run shot.

Mizzou started the scoring in the fifth inning with a double from freshman Emily Crane. Senior Jenna Marston followed by hitting in a near-fielder's choice at Hofstra pitcher Olivia Galati that was misplayed for an error. Crane came around for second base on the play, giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Hudson's home run followed, scoring Marston to set the final score of 5-0. Hudson finished the game batting 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Tigers recorded eight hits against Galati for Hofstra, who finished her season with a 40-12 pitching record.

A second game of the day was forced after Hofstra took the initial contest that started at 2 p.m. ET by a score of 10-0 in five innings. Mizzou opted for Hudson in the circle, with the slugger allowing just three earned runs of the nine scored by the Pride in game one's bottom of the second inning. She took the loss (2.0 IP) to fall to 11-6 and 1-1 in the Columbia Regional.

Muller entered in relief after the second inning and pitched the final two innings of the first game.

<![CDATA[Kentucky ties school record with 40th win and clinches ticket to super regional]]>
Nunley

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky freshman pitcher Kelsey Nunley threw seven strong innings, allowing only one hit and no earned runs, while junior infielder Krystal Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI, as No. 12 Kentucky posted its school-record tying 40th win of the season and clinched its ticket to the NCAA Lexington Regional Finals on Sunday with a 6-2 win against Virginia Tech at John Cropp Stadium.

The win for Kentucky was its 40th of the season, tying the school record for most wins in a season. Head coach Rachel Lawson's 2011 team also had 40 wins en route to advancing to the school's first super regional. UK's win against Virginia Tech was its first in school history against the Hokies in three tries.

This is the third time UK has advanced to a regional final, also accomplishing the feat in 2009 and 2011. The Wildcats lost the first game of the 2009 regional final to Ohio State while it defeated Michigan in Game 1 of the Ann Arbor Regional Final in 2011. The Wildcats are now 10-8 all-time in the NCAA tournament.

Nunley was fantastic in the circle for the second consecutive game, throwing a complete-game one-hitter, allowing two runs - both unearned - with five strikeouts. For the season, Nunley is now 26-8 with a 2.00 ERA, striking out 185 in 245.1 innings pitched. So far this weekend, Nunley is an impressive 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA, striking out 10 batters in 15 innings pitched while opponents are hitting just .140 against her.

Offensively, Kentucky was paced by Smith and fellow junior first baseman Lauren Cumbess. Smith went 2-for-3 in the game with her third home run of the season and two RBI, while Cumbess blasted her team-best 12th homerun of the season to finish 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Freshman outfielder Sylver Samuel was 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored, while sophomore catcher Griffin Joiner was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Virginia Tech posted two runs in the second inning on one hit and a Kentucky error. Bkaye Smith delivered the two-RBI infield single to tie the game before Nunley retired 16 of the last 17 batters she faced to seal the UK win.

The Hokies started Kelly Heinz in the game, who went 3.1 innings, allowing four runs - three earned - on four hits with four strikeouts. She was relieved in the fourth inning by Maggie Tyler, who worked one inning, allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits with one strikeout. Jasmin Harrell threw the final 2.2 innings of work, allowing no runs on one hit.

Kentucky scored first in the game posting two runs on two hits in the opening inning. After Joiner set the table with a one-out walk, Cumbess stepped to the plate and hit a high-towering fly to leftfield that cleared the fence to give UK a 2-0 lead. Heinz then got a lineout and strikeout to end the inning.

Virginia Tech tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning after starting the frame with two runners on base on a walk and a UK error. Nunley got a strikeout and a groundout for two outs before a hard-hit chopper took a bad bounce away from a UK infielder to score two runs and tie the game 2-2.

UK answered to take the lead back in the third inning on an infield single and two Virginia Tech errors. Samuel started the rally with an infield single back to the pitcher, stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Dill then hit a soft liner to the Virginia Tech third baseman that went off the infielder's glove, scoring Samuel to give UK a 3-2 lead.

The Wildcats scored three more runs in the next two innings to take a 6-2 lead and seal the Kentucky victory. UK posted its fourth run on the home run by Smith, who laced a one-out solo shot to leftfield. Smith was also responsible for UK's two runs in the fifth inning, getting an RBI single to the left side of the infield with the bases loaded that scored two runs when the shortstop's throw went wide.

<![CDATA[Ragin Cajuns put heat on LSU in 1-0 win to advance to super regionals]]>
Wallace

BATON ROUGE, La. -– Jordan Wallace pitched out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the seventh to record a four-hit shutout and give Louisiana an NCAA regional championship victory against LSU with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd at Tiger Park.

"I’ve been saying this all season, I’m so proud of these girls, " Head coach Michael Lotief said. "They’ve worked so hard. They care about to each other. They believe in their dreams, and they’ve overcome tremendous obstacles. When you get into some of these dogfights, a lot of it is luck. The game rewarded us, and we understand that. LSU is a worthy opponent, and that was a well-played college softball game."

The victory sends Louisiana to play No. 8 Michigan in an NCAA super regional in Ann Arbor, Mich.

This will be the second consecutive year that Louisiana will make a Super Regional appearance, a feat that they have never achieved.

Wallace, who improved to 31-7 on the year, threw her third consecutive shutout in the LSU Regional, walking four and striking out four with a pair of hit batters. In three tourney games, she threw 21 scoreless innings, allowing just seven hits with 25 strikeouts.

“What she did [Sunday] was phenomenal," Lotief said of Wallace. "She went through her share of struggles early in the season. The crowd was trying to intimidate her, the hitters made adjustments. As the game wore on, you could see she lost some velocity. I saw a lot of heart, will and fight. She is a warrior and a winner.”

The Cajuns scored the only run of the game in the first when Nerissa Myers led off with a line drive double off the top of the fence in left center. She went to third on a fly ball to right field by Brianna Cherry and scored when Sarah Draheim hit a ground ball to short that went through the legs of Bell to make it a 1-0 game.

“It’s always a difference maker with a run on the board," Myers said in the post-game press conference. "It helps Jordan [Wallace], but it also gives her a little cushion. Of course, we would have loved to score more than one run. With that run though, we know she can still go confidently in there and play here game. The ultimate goal is to make her feel as comfortable as possible.”

It was the team-leading 65th RBI of the season for Draheim and the 242nd run scored by Myers in her career, good for 20th place on the NCAA career chart. Myers was responsible for five of Louisiana’s seven runs in the tourney, scoring four herself with a pinch-runner plating the fifth.

The run also marked the third consecutive game that the Ragin’ Cajuns scored in the first inning, grabbing leads that Wallace would not relinquish.

But unlike the 3-0 win against Northwestern State on Friday or the 3-0 win against LSU on Saturday, Wallace had some extra work to do.

Wallace retired the Tigers in order just once in the contest, that coming in the third, while LSU left 10 runners on base and six in scoring position.

The Tigers had a pair of baserunners in the first when Wallace walked Bianca Bell with two outs and Allison Falcon was hit by a pitch. Wallace got out of the inning by getting Sandra Simmons to pop out to second.

LSU also had runners on first and second with one out in the second when Tammy Wray was safe on an infield single and Lauren Houston was hit by a pitch. Wallace again bore down, striking out Simone Heyward and getting A.J. Andrews to pop out to second to end the inning.

The Tigers left a runner on third in the fifth and it could have been much worse. Heyward led off with a walk and one batter later, Jacee Blades appeared to have beaten out an infield single, only to be called out for hitting the ball outside of the batter’s box.

With Bell batting with two outs, a wild pitch by Wallace and a little deception by Bell allowed Heyward to go all the way to third when Bell pretended to be hit by the wild pitch causing Draheim to take her time in retrieving the errant pitch. Wallace again overcame it, getting Bell to fly to short to end the inning.

A two-out bloop double by Kloss allowed the Tiger to threaten in the sixth, but Wallace induced Wray to pop out to short for the third out.

The seventh proved to be the biggest jam for the Cajuns as Heyward walked with one out and went to second on a single by Andrews. Blades was next, slapping a light bunt down the third base line that Natalie Fernandez could not make a play on to load the bases.

But as she had done time after time, Wallace bore down. She induced power-hitter Bell to hit a week pop-up to the mound for the second out and then struck out Falcon on a 1-2 pitch to end the game.

For the second consecutive day, LSU pitcher Rachele Fico (24-13) was the hard-luck loser, allowing the Cajuns just two hits and five base runners in losing for the second time in as many days to Louisiana. On Saturday, Fico allowed just two hits, both homeruns, in a 3-0 loss that sent the Cajuns to the regional title game.

<![CDATA[No. 4-seed Texas blanks South Carolina behind two home runs from Thom]]>
Thom

AUSTIN, Texas -- Two home runs from junior Taylor Thom drove in six runs and lifted fourth-seeded Texas to a 6-0 victory against South Carolina on Sunday in the NCAA Softball Austin Regional championship at Red & Charline McCombs Field. Thom hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and a grand slam in the fifth, setting the UT record for RBIs during an NCAA tournament contest.

The grand slam was Thom's fourth of the season and she became the fifth player in NCAA history with four or more slams during a campaign. With the six runs batted in, Thom raised her season total to 63, the most in a year in Texas history.

In the circle, senior Blaire Lune (28-5) went the distance, recording eight strikeouts and scattering five hits and four walks. Luna did not allow a hit in six bases-loaded situations, earning her 11th shutout of the campaign. Katie Marks (8-8) recorded the loss for the Gamecocks, tossing 4.3 innings. She gave up six runs on five hits, including the two Thom home runs. Julie Sarratt came in for the remaining 1.2 and allowed just one walk.

South Carolina had a chance to score in the top of the first as Luna started the game with two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases. The Gamecocks were unable to capitalize, though, as Luna struck out the next three batters to get out of the bind.

After the defensive hold, the Longhorns took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Senior Taylor Hoagland started the Texas offense with a free pass and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Brejae Washington. Thom stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run homer to left field, breaking the Texas RBI record with her 58th and 59th of the season. Two lineouts closed the inning.

South Carolina loaded the bases with no outs again in the second inning after a single to the left side and two nicely placed bunts that avoided UT infielders. A drive to center by shortstop Samie Garcia was scooped off the hop by center fielder Washington, who threw to catcher Mandy Ogle. Ogle tagged out pinch runner Brooke Barnhill. A groundball to the shortstop was snatched by Thom, who tossed home for the force out. A pop fly was caught by freshman second baseman Stephanie Ceo in shallow right to close the inning.

Both teams went quietly until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Thom struck again. Texas loaded the bases with one out after Ceo walked. Hoagland reached on an error by the shortstop and Washington singled with a blooper to shallow center field. Thom cleared the bases with a grand slam to left center, marking her fourth grand slam of the season and improving the Texas lead to 6-0.

Luna retired six of the final seven batters she faced, surrendering only a one-out walk in the seventh to seal the victory.

With the 6-0 win, the Longhorns advanced to the NCAA Softball Super Regional tournament.

<![CDATA[Michigan advances to super regionals with 3-1 victory against California]]>
Driesenga

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Sara Driesenga stymied the California Golden Bears for the second day in a row, hurling a complete game in Michigan's 3-1, NCAA Regional title victory on Sunday at Alumni Field.

Driesenga tossed her third consecutive complete game of the tournament, pitching every inning for the Wolverines in their three victories. She yielded just one run in 21 innings of work. Cal's only run on Sunday came off a Cheyenne Cordes solo home run in the third inning.

The NCAA Regional championship is Michigan's second in a row and 16th overall. The Maize and Blue will appear in the NCAA Super Regional for the eighth time in nine seasons since the format began in 2005.

In a scoreless game in the second inning, Cal's Danielle Henderson tried to stretch a double into a triple, but was thrown out on the relay from junior rightfielder Nicole Sappingfield to senior second baseman Ashley Lane to senior third baseman Amy Knapp.

Knapp had five assists on the 10 ground ball outs Driesenga induced and made a clean pick on a hot shot from Cordes leading off the bottom of the first.

After striking out eight Cal hitters in her shutout on Saturday, Driesenga did not get her first strike out until the fourth inning, but racked up five in the final half of the game, including two in the fifth and in the seventh.

A two-out, two-run double from freshman Sierra Romero opened the scoring. Junior Lyndsay Doyle, who reached on one of her three hits on the day, and Sappingfield came around to score.

Cordes hit her home run the next half inning, cutting Michigan's lead in half. The score stayed that way until the sixth when junior Caitlin Blanchard hit a leadoff, line-drive home run.

Cal threatened once more when two batters reached in the seventh. There was some controversy when Cal's Britt Vonk collided with Lane as she dove for a ground ball. The umpires ruled obstruction on Lane and awarded Vonk second base.

With two outs and two on, Cordes came up to bat, but Driesenga got her to fly out to right and end the game.

The Wolverines will next play in a Super Regional against Louisiana-Lafayette.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama claimed its ninth consecutive NCAA regional title and 11th overall as it raced past Western Kentucky 13-1 Sunday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium. With the victory the Crimson Tide improves to 45-13 overall.

Alabama junior pitcher Jackie Traina (19-6) was dominant, allowing just one hit and striking out two in four innings. The Crimson Tide plated the 13 runs on 15 hits to improve to 41-9 all-time in regional action.

The Tide's speed wreaked havoc on the Lady Toppers (43-18) as senior Kayla Braud, and the freshman tandem of Haylie McCleney and Andrea Hawkins recorded three hits apiece. Braud capped off the tournament with eight hits and moved her hitting streak to 23 games.

Small ball continued to work for Alabama as they manufactured a run to open the game in the first. After back-to-back infield singles by Braud and McCleney, Hunt put down a sac-bunt that set up a Molly Fichtner sac-fly to left-center that easily scored Braud from third.

Alabama opened the floodgates in the second inning, scoring six runs to take a 7-0 lead. Sophomore Danielle Richard led off the inning with a solo home run and then after a Courtney Conley run on a passed ball, Hunt smashed a grand slam for her 15th home run on the season.

The Tide pushed its lead to 9-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, with Fichtner starting the scoring with a sharp liner to left, followed by Richard adding another RBI with a sac-fly to center.

Alabama wrapped up its scoring with three more runs in the fifth. McCleney ripped a two-run single up the middle and then Fichtner drove in her third run on the day on a groundout to short. In her final at-bat at Rhoads Stadium senior Jackey Branham ripped an RBI double off the wall in left-center to give the Tide a 13-0 lead.
