Rankings - Week 1

August 30, 2012 to September 3, 2012

Week 1 Movers

What a first week. From opening night with a sweaty battle in Nashville between SEC foes -- don't sleep on Vanderbilt much longer, folks -- to Monday night's exciting finish between Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, which ended with the first overtime game in Lane Stadium history, the thrills came in bunches.

So, taking all the statistics into account, what did we learn? Southern California is exactly who we thought it was, Alabama -- even if not in our top 15 yet -- showed that the SEC isn't going to give up its grip on the championship trophy without a fight, and a few other top-25 teams -- we're looking at you Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Florida -- need get it in gear before the near misses become "Oh I wish" moments.

Rank School Points Record Comment
1

Oklahoma St.

Shop
1,229.53 1-0 If your team scored a thousand points and put up a million yards, it'd be here too. Next up: a real-life team in Arizona (we think).
2

Florida St.

Shop
990.26 1-0 Losing DE Brandon Jenkins takes all the fun out of the 69-3 mauling the Seminoles laid in Week 1. How will FSU respond now?
3

Arizona St.

Shop
844.40 1-0 Ah, the old 'Let's play an in-state school to show our camaraderie' game. It'll get you up here in September every year.
4

Texas Tech

Shop
822.90 1-0 Even vs. Northwestern State, allowing only 3 points after giving up a school-record 471 last year is a good start.
5

North Carolina

Shop
794.04 1-0 RB Giovani Bernard rushed for a TD, caught a scoring pass and returned a punt for a TD. Watch him folks. He's what they call 'good.'
6

Nebraska

Shop
773.18 1-0 Who knew QB Taylor Martinez could throw like that? Obviously the Huskers' coaching staff, as it coaxed 354 passing yards from him.
7

Purdue

Shop
751.12 1-0 U da man, Robert Marve. The Miami (Fla.) transfer had a pretty solid line Week 1: 30-38-1, 295 yards, 3TD.
8

Connecticut

Shop
708.00 1-0 We like defense. In a 37-0 blowout against UMass, the Huskies gave up just 59 yards -- all game. Only 3 yards were on the ground.
9

Utah

Shop
689.20 1-0 RB John White bulldozed 'em, QB Jordan Wynn confused 'em and backup QB Travis Wilson finished 'em. Nice combo there.
10

Ohio St.

Shop
645.82 1-0 Braxton Miller wore down Miami (Ohio). Plain and simple, the guy will be special in an Urban Meyer offense.
11

Virginia

Shop
635.58 1-0 We all laughed when Virginia was in the top 15 to start last year. The Cavs won eight games and showed us. Repeat scenario?
12

Missouri

Shop
634.38 1-0 Did anyone notice who the Tigers played last week? Neither did we because we're looking to Saturday's SEC opener.
13

Southern California

Shop
621.30 1-0 One play, one touchdown. That's the way you open the season. The Trojans have plenty of weapons to stay up here too.
14

UCLA

Shop
615.44 1-0 What is it with these Los Angeles teams not being able to stay away from each other? Thrashing Rice makes it easy.
15

LSU

Shop
609.26 1-0 Smash and mouth. Get to know how those words go together when talking about the Tigers' multi-faceted running game.

The NCAA.com Power Rankings are based solely on team statistics. The formula includes current stats for both offense and defense, taking into account teams’ ability to produce positive results on both ends of the field. A strength-of-schedule factor is also included to reward teams that play more BCS opponents, and gives a disadvantage to teams that play a high number of non-BCS and FCS teams. The same SOS factor carries across the whole season for a team, meaning the weekly shift in ranking is accounted for completely by that week’s statistics.
