HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team improved to 5-1 on Sunday with wins over NJIT (25-2), Virginia Tech (22-5) and Army (20-7) at Haverford. The Blue Jays were led by the Foil squad's 23 victories to just four defeats.

"I expected Army to be the strongest opponent of the day," said head coach James Murray. "The final score is no indication of the closeness of the meet. The Army team is fast and aggressive, every point called for skill and coolness under pressure. Typical of each Army bout was Samantha Dolan's come from behind win with four seconds remaining in overtime."

In the Foil, senior Grace Fried (Forest Hills, NY/Stuyvesant) led the Blue Jays with four wins (4-1) and is now 7-4 on the season. Dolan picked up three wins to just one loss, while freshman Jen Hession (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) also went 3-1 for Hopkins.

In the Epee, freshman Lauren Chinn (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) went undefeated, winning all five of her bouts. She is now 11-2 on the season. Freshman Nicole Salter (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and sophomore Corinne Warren (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) also picked up five wins for Hopkins.

Sophomore Mary Vitale (Hampton, NJ/Voorhees) went 7-0 in the Sabre, highlighting three Blue Jays that went unbeaten in the Sabre. She is now 10-3 on the season. Also going unbeaten were sophomore Adiya Katseff (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold) (4-0) and freshman Katie Herman (Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley Regional) (2-0). Herman is unbeaten on the season at 6-0. Sophomore Alysson Mondoro (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) also had a strong showing for the Blue Jays, winning four of her six bouts to improve to 8-4 overall.
