HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Oakland University men's and women's track teams used strong performances in both 3000 steeplechase races to set the tone on the first day of the Gina Relays, Friday afternoon. Not only did sophomore Mike Craze and junior Leslie Schachinger set school record, they both finished third in the race as well. Oakland broke five school records among the 11 additions to the top 10 list. The Golden Grizzlies will return to the Gina Relays, Saturday morning.

Schachinger put on a final burst of speed in the back stretch to just edge ahead of the previous record. Her final time of 11:49.32 broke the mark of 11:51.00 set by Kayla Doan in 2007. Freshman Kelsey Carmean ran the second fastest 10,000 in Oakland history at 38:38.56. She missed the school record by less than seven seconds. Freshman Marissa Nay had her third straight PR in the long jump, this one at 15 feet, 1.50 inches.

Craze ran 9:33.84 to break the record of 9:36.82, set by Paul Kulisek in 2006. Kulisek's mark had been the last individual record from the first season of track remaining to be broken. For the third straight meet, sophomore Adam Grubuis and freshman Anthony Halfmann set new records in the hammer and shot put respectively. Grubuis tossed the hammer 133 feet, 11 inches while Halfmann had a put of 45 feet, four inches. On his last jump of the day, freshman Andrew Ollie leaped a school record 21 feet, 1.50 inches. That broke the old record by 3/4th of an inch.
