Sept. 6, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP -- Georgetown's baseball program was placed on three years' probation by the NCAA because 26 players received a total of more than $60,000 in excess pay from 2001 to 2007 in a work-study program.

The university president said it is the first major NCAA rules infraction at the school.

The penalty comes about a year after Georgetown concluded its own investigation and reported the violations to the NCAA.

Georgetown says the problem was timekeeping irregularities: Athletes did the work they were supposed to -- such as field maintenance and laundry -- but were paid more than they should have been.
