Georgia Tech Rallies To Take Second In Central; Washington Takes 10-Shot Lead Into Day Two
Courtesy of Georgia Tech
Bowling Green, Ky. – Cameron Tringale fired a 3-under-par 69 Thursday, and Georgia Tech rallied from a poor start to post a team score of 292, 4-over-par, and take second place after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional golf tournament.
No. 2 seed Tech found itself 7-over-par through its first five holes at the Club at Olde Stone Thursday, but the Yellow Jackets found their legs and played the final 13 holes in 3-under-par, finishing 18 holes tied with UCLA. Washington, the top seed, had no problems Thursday despite a storm that delayed the start of the round, playing the course in 6-under-par 282 and taking a 10-shot lead into Friday’s second round.
NC State shot 294 (6-over-par) to take fourth place, followed by Louisville and Mississippi (296), Duke (298), East Tennessee State (299) and Ohio State (300). The top five finishers after 54 holes advance to the NCAA Championship, May 26-30, in Bowling Green, Ky.
“The hour and a half delay affected us a little, but the first five holes are very hard,” said Tech coach Bruce Heppler. “But the thing that’s impressive is we’re getting better at hanging in there. Chesson birdied the last two holes in his round today, and JT overcame a really rough start.
“I thought the golf course was really hard. We played our practice round in 35 mile-per-hour winds yesterday. But the wind calmed today, and the rain softened the course a little. You’ve got to drive it in the fairway, lots of rough.”
Tringale, a senior from Laguna, Niguel, Calif., mostly avoided the early troubles his teammates found. He bogeyed the first hole and the 15th, but balanced that with five birdies.
John-Tyler Griffin, a sophomore from Wilson, N.C., played the first four holes 4-over-par, but posted four birdies and two bogeys coming in to finish with a 74. David Dragoo, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., played a much steadier round with three bogeys and one birdie for a 74.
Junior Chesson Hadley and freshman James White each shot 75 for Tech.
Washington’s Nick Taylor fired a 5-under-par 67 to pace the Huskies and take a 2-shot lead over Tringale in the individual race. NC State’s Darren Blair and Matt Hill, and Washington’s Richard Lee, are in a three-way tie at 2-under-pae 70, while four players are tied at 1-under 71.
Friday’s second round gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time. The Yellow Jackets tee off the first tee at 10:40 a.m.

As he has done all season long, sophomore All-SEC standout John Peterson led the way for LSU in the opening round as he finished the day in sole possession of second place on the leaderboard with an impressive bogey-free round of 2-under par 70.
Peterson, a first-team all-conference selection this season, birdied the final hole on each side with his first on the par-five 18th and his second on the par-five ninth after opening on the back nine.
Peterson is joined in the Top 10 of the leaderboard by fellow sophomore standout Andrew Loupe, who fired an even-par round of 72 during Thursday’s competition. Loupe carded five birdies with his round, while adding three bogeys and one double bogey to finish the day at level par.
Sophomore Clayton Rotz added a 4-over 76 to LSU’s team total on the afternoon as he currently sits in a tie for 37th place in the individual standings. Freshmen Sang Yi and Josh Jones were each making their NCAA postseason debut for the Tigers on Thursday and finished with two rounds of 8-over 80 and 10-over 82, respectively.

Austin, Texas -- The No. 8 University of Florida men’s golf team wrapped up day one of the NCAA Southwest Regional in third place, shooting nine-over par 293, at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
Seniors Billy Horschel (Grant, Fla.) and Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.) led the team with one-over par rounds of 72.
“This was another typical day for us,” said head coach Buddy Alexander.
“We got off to a bad start and then we battled back. I’m proud of the way our guys have fought all year and this was just another example of them sticking in there.”
The Texas Tech Red Raiders jumped out to a two-under par score of 282, having a pair of players shoot under par. Texas’ Lance Lopez, playing on his home course, shot three-under par 68 and is tied with Lamar’s Hugues Joannes on top of the individual leader board.
Strickler opened with a birdie on the first hole, but made three bogeys and was two-over through eight holes. After carding three birdies in his next five holes, he was at one-under par for the round. Back-to-back bogeys on holes 15 and 16 put him at one-over for the day. Horschel mixed three birdies with two bogeys and a double-bogey for his round.
Both golfers are tied for ninth.
Senior Toby Ragland (Jacksonville, Fla.) struggled through his first nine holes, making the turn at four-over par, but made birdies on No. 11 and 14. A bogey on the 18th put him at three-over 74 for the day, tied for 18th. Junior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) rounded out the scoring with a four-over 75. He made par on his last eight holes and is tied for 24th heading into the second round. Junior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) shot five-over 76 and is tied for 31st.
“We came into the tournament wanting to put ourselves in a position to win,” said Coach Alexander. “If we actually get off to a good start, we could have some really good things happen.”
The Gators will tee off on Friday at 9:40 a.m. central time. Live hole-by-hole scoring will be available online at www.golfstat.com. At the conclusion of the day’s round, results will be posted online at www.gatorzone.com.
