Dominican Blanks Whitewater, 1-0
Nov. 15, 2009
River Forest, Ill. - Edwin Lagunas (Waukegan, Ill.) notched his second score of the weekend in the 16th minute of play, as the Dominican University Stars edged the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to advance to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships. Lagunas' goal was Dominican's only threat in the first half, created as Ryan Roberts (Elmhurst, Ill.) challenged for a fifty-fifty ball, finding Aaron Romo (Chicago, Ill.) who sent a cross to Lagunas who then beat the Whitewater goalkeeper for the lone score of the afternoon. The Warhawks had a number of scoring opportunities with their best chance coming on a penalty kick in the 47th minute. Dominican's Maxwell Gutbrod (Slinger, Wis.) denied Whitewater's Dan Montanye, making a diving save just inside the right post. Gutbrod made six saves on the afternoon, improving to 6-0-1 while picking up his fourth shutout of the season. The Stars will meet the winner of the Loras and Macalester College game next weekend at a site yet to be determined. |
