FRISCO, Texas (AP) -Graham Zusi's second-half goal gave second-seeded Maryland a 1-0 victory over 13th-seeded North Carolina in the NCAA College Cup championship game on Sunday. Maryland beat North Carolina for the third time in as many meetings this season in the first all-Atlantic Coast Conference final in the 50-year history of the NCAA men's soccer tournament. Tar Heels defender Eddie Ababio blocked Jeremy Hall's first shot, but Zusi blasted a rebound into the left corner from 18 yards out past North Carolina goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty with 23:50 left. The Terrapins (23-3-0) won their third national title, finishing the season with a 16-game winning streak and denying North Carolina a sweep of the men's and women's titles. The Tar Heel women beat Notre Dame for the championship last Sunday. Maryland took the championship in 2005 and shared another national crown in 1968 when it tied Michigan State in the final. North Carolina (15-8-1) captured its only men's College Cup in 2001. In the semifinals, Zusi scored the game's only goal in extra time to beat St. John's. |
