May 7, 2009 Ferris State Posts Win Over Rival GVSU Ferris State University posted a three-set victory at five singles to earn a hard-fought 5-4 victory over rival Grand Valley State in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament Thursday morning (May 7). With the win, the Bulldogs will move on to the second round and face top-seeded Northwood. Grand Valley State led 2-1 after doubles, posting victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The two teams then split the four matches at the top of singles, making the score 4-3 GVSU with two matches remaining. The Bulldogs earned a pair of three-set victories at five and six singles to pull out the comeback win. Brian Anderson of FSU won the clinching match, winning a tiebreaker 8-6 in the final set to claim tine victory. Singles competition Washburn Slips Past Southwest Baptist ABILENE -- One of sports oldest adages is that it's almost impossible to beat the same team three times in one season. Washburn University, however, proved there were some exceptions to that rule Thursday with its third 5-4 win over Southwest Baptist University this season. The Ichabods' win in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Men's Tournament semifinals sends WU into Friday's 10 a.m. championship against ACU, the top team in the region and the 19th-ranked team in the nation. Washburn's Yann Kasay led SBU's Jorge Palacios 6-1, 5-2 and was serving to win the match, but he lost the last five games of the second set as Palacios forced a third set. Kasay won the third set to win the match for Washburn, which improved to 13-5 with the win while Southwest Baptist finished its season at 15-9. No. 17 Francis Marion Advances With 5-1 Win Over Mars Hill SAVANNAH, Ga. - The No. 17-ranked Francis Marion men's tennis squad advanced to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Southeast Regional with a 5-1 win over Mars Hill on Thursday afternoon at the AASU Tennis Complex in Savannah. The Patriots (16-5), who advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals last season, picked up the victory over the Lions (13-6) in only the second meeting between the two schools in program history. Francis Marion won two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Dirk Bair and Karl Rogers notched a quick 8-3 win over Taylan Batuk and Alessandro du Besse at No. 3 doubles, then the sixth-ranked duo of Dilshod Sharifi and Oshada Wijemanne collected an 8-2 win over Andre Schafer and Stevan Stankovic at No. 1 doubles. Mars Hill salvaged a point at No. 2 doubles with Tyrone La Reservee and Koeche Smith's 8-4 win over Jack Bishop and Matthew Keth. The Patriots then clinched the match with three straight-set wins in singles. Wijemanne, ranked No. 10 in the nation in singles, defeated du Besse, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Bastian Cwalinna delivered a 6-3, 6-1 win over Schafer at No. 4 singles, then Bair clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over Stankovic at No. 6 singles. Northwood Has No Problem With Michigan Tech The Northwood University men's tennis team opened the NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Michigan Tech Thursday morning (May 7). Northwood is now 18-1 overall on the season. Michigan Tech's season comes to an end at 9-10. The Timberwolves posted three victories in doubles, losing a total of nine games to lead 3-0 heading into singles. NU then won at two and four singles in straight sets, losing only one game to clinch the sweep. Northwood will now face Ferris State in the second round after the Bulldogs won a 5-4 contest over Grand Valley State. The match between the Timberwolves and the Bulldogs will take place Friday (May 8) at 10 a.m. Singles competition
SEU Knocks Off NWMSU SEU defeated NWMSU in today's first round match, 5-0. SEU will now advance to play #11 Cameron at 10:00am tomorrow (Friday) in the second round of the NCAA tournament, also at the CU Tennis Complex. Bloomsburg University and West Virginia Wesleyan Advance BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Bloomsburg University and West Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis teams advanced to the championship match of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament by winning semi-final matches on Friday. Bloomsburg beat West Liberty by a 5-1 score, while West Virginia Wesleyan moved on with a 5-0 win over Virginia State. The Huskies took two of three in doubles play with the number one team of Fernando Perez and Ryan Glubo winning 8-4, while Lee Wexler and Mark Schroeder posted an 8-3 victory at number two. West Liberty's three doubles team of Rick Thaxton and Darren Fields won 8-6 for what turned out to be the Hilltoppers only win of the match. In singles play, the Huskies closed out the match with wins at the top of its lineup. Perez won at number one 6-1, 6-1 with Wexler winning 6-3, 6-3 at two and Schroeder winning 6-3, 6-4 at number three. Bloomsburg was also winning at four and five singles when play was halted. The Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan breezed through doubles winning 8-0 at both number two with Daniel Lobo and Rafael Cavalcante and at three doubles with Luis Cruz and Danilo Franciscon and getting an 8-4 win at number one. In singles play, Cavalcante won at number one 6-1, 6-1, while Doug Hornak posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number five. The Bobcats were also winning in the other four matches when play was halted. The matchup on Friday between Bloomsburg and West Virginia Wesleyan will be the second of the year between the teams. In mid-April the Bobcats handed the Huskies a 5-4 loss in Bloomsburg. The winner of Friday's matchup will move on to Orlando, FL next week for the NCAA Division II national championship round.
No. 20 Lander Advances With 5-1 Win Over No. 27 Augusta State SAVANNAH, Ga. - No. 20-ranked Lander picked up a 5-1 win to advance to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Southeast Regional on Thursday afternoon, eliminating fellow PBC foe and No. 27-ranked Augusta State.The win by the Bearcats (9-8) was their 45th in NCAA DII tournament history as Lander improved to 45-8 all-time in NCAA postseason play. The Jaguars (10-11) end their season after a third straight NCAA regionals berth. Lander took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles. Gary Bertoldo and Levan Clark notched a quick 8-1 win over Guilherme Ferraz and Rafael Milhati at No. 3 doubles. TC Valle and Sheharyar Wali then collected an 8-5 win over Bernardo Fernandes and Jenner Stevenson at No. 1 doubles, while Damien Cordesse and Juan Manrique completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Henrique Boturao and Frederico Mendes at No. 2 doubles. Augusta State made it a match in singles, by winning four of the first six sets. Stevenson took advantage of a hobbled Cordesse to win, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for the Jaguars' first point. But Valle notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ferraz at No. 4 singles, then Clark closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Boturao at No. 2 doubles. Lander now advances to face host and defending DII national champion Armstrong Atlantic at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in second round action. Rockhurst, Drury win opening matches in Midwest Regional KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rockhurst defeated Indianapolis, 5-0, in a first-round match in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Midwest Regional on Thursday at the Rockhurst University Loyola Park tennis courts. Second-seeded Rockhurst won all three doubles matches to grab a 3-0 lead over seventh-seeded Indianapolis. Rockhurst's Adam Bales and Ryan Field rallied to win No. 3 doubles, 9-7. Ben Newell won No. 4 singles, 6-2 and 6-2, and Bales captured No. 6 singles, 6-1 and 6-0, for the host Hawks. Third-seeded Drury came from behind to defeat sixth-seeded Northern Kentucky, 5-3, on Thursday at Rockhurst. The Panthers won No. 1 and 2 doubles. Alex Kacamakis, Nahom Serekeberhan and Antonio Garcia Santos won the top three singles matches for Drury. Rockhurst, 19-6, and Drury, 17-7, face each other for the third time this season in a second-round match at Rockhurst at 10 a.m. Friday. The winner will advance to the Division II Championships, May 13-16, in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
