Sept. 26, 2008

Toronto, Ontario Former IPFW Mens Volleyball All-American and MIVA Player of the year Matt Zbyszewski and his partner Josh Binstock won the 2008 Canadian National Beach Open Championships held this past August.

It was a heck of a tournament, Zbyszewski said Friday. Hopefully it is a glimpse of what is to come. It was my first tournament with my new partner (Binstock) and it was an instant connection.

The two were a fifth seed in the Division One bracket which was double elimination for 28 teams.

Zbyszewski, a first team AVCA All-American selection in 2004, and the MIVA player of the year in 04 finished his career at IPFW fourth all time in kills with 1,703 and second in career aces with 127 behind only Olympian Lloy Ball. Zbyszewski also ranks fifth in all-time digs (674).

The tournament, held in Ashbridges Bay, Toronto, was the first time Zbyszewski and Binstock played together as they defeated Ehren Cadieux and partner Jessie Lelliott in two games (21-17, 21-18). Zbyszewskis duo won the semifinals (21-16, 21-16).
