McGrath Leads Gannon In Season Opener At Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Gannon wrestling team competed in the University of Buffalo Open Sunday, as Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) took home a second-place finish to lead the Golden Knights. No team scores were kept. 

Over 280 wrestlers participated in the event, which featured a number of NCAA Division I programs such as Buffalo, Ohio State, and Rutgers. Four GU grapplers advanced to the quarterfinals. 

McGrath, a heavyweight, went 4-1 with three pins on his way to a runner-up position. He beat Brett Correll of Buffalo 6-2 in the semifinals before falling to Cody Morrison of Ohio State. Tony Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) went 3-2 out of the 174-pound class, taking fourth place in the event. A.J. Milanak (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) took home a fifth place finish, going 6-1 in the 141-pound class. 197-pounder Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) went 3-2, good enough for sixth place.
 
The Golden Knights will next compete in the Catholic Invitational Saturday, November 8, at Mercyhurst College.
