California's Zsofi Susanyi upset USC's Sabrina Santamaria to advance to the semifinals. Florida's Allie Will and Stanford's Nicole Gibbs and Mallory Burdette also earned quarterfinal victories.


After many top seeds fell on the opening day, almost all favorites, including Florida's Allie Will advanced to the round of 16. Kansas State's Petra Niedermayerova was the only seeded player to fall.

The first day of the singles tournament featured a number of upsets including 2010 champion Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia who was defeated by Southern California’s Sabrina Santamaria.
