PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Syracuse women’s ice hockey team beat the Providence Friars, 3-1, for its first win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 17. It was SU’s first meeting against the Friars, who are receiving votes in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey polls. Junior co-captain Stefanie Marty matched a career-high with two goals, while sophomore Janelle Malcolm added one late in the third period to secure the win.

Despite a scoreless opening period, the second stanza was all Orange. Freshman Isabel Menard connected with junior co-captain Julie Rising, who passed the puck to Marty at the right side of the net and lifted it over goaltender Genevieve Lacasse's right shoulder midway through the second to put SU on the board, 1-0. Three minutes later, Menard sent a pass from the right boards through the slot to Marty, who lifted the puck under the cross bar to give the Orange the 2-0 edge. Marty’s two goals matched her career-best, while Menard set her own career-high with two assists against the Friars.

The Friars tried to fight its way back, outshooting Syracuse, 10-6, in the third period. Jessica Cohen scored the lone Providence goal in the opening minutes of the final period, but it was not enough overcome the deficit. Malcolm scored the final empty-netter goal from the left boards to seal the 3-1 victory. It was Malcolm’s fourth goal of the season.

In net, senior Lucy Schoedel finished with 28 saves against the Friars, besting Lacasse, who had 17.

The Orange hits the road to Troy, N.Y. to play a two-game series at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute next weekend. The first game will be played Friday, Oct. 23 at 2:30 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday. It will be SU’s final road contest before its home opener against Niagara on Friday, Nov. 6.
