Amherst Downs Chicago, Advances To Championship

Courtesy of Oglethorpe Athletics LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Number one seeded Amherst College rallied to defeat the University of Chicago in semifinal action on Wednesday at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships, 5-4. The Maroons took two of three doubles matches to jump into the lead but the Lord Jeffs stormed back to win four of the six singles matches to advance to Thursday’s final. In the doubles action, Chicago won at numbers one and two with the combinations of Kendra Higgins and Chrissy Hu and Jennifer Kung and Vindya Dayananda topping Brittany Berckes and Natasha Brown and Amelia Bell and Anuja Ankola of Amherst, 8-6 and 8-2 respectively. The Lord Jeffs took the #3 slot with Jill Wexler and Laura Danzig topping Carmen VacaGuzman and Tiffany Nguyen, 8-4. In the singles matches Amherst won at numbers two, four, five and six to complete the comeback bid. With the match score tied at four apiece, the contest came down to the action at #2 singles where Carlissa King outlasted Chicago’s Jennifer Kung, 7-5, 6-4. With the victory, Amherst advances to face Williams College in Thursday’s final at 1:00 p.m. The championship match between the Ephs and Lord Jeffs will mark the fourth time these two teams have met this season with Amherst claiming two out of the first three contests. |
