St. Pete Times Forum Information

History on St. Pete Times Forum (www.sptimesforum.com)

The St. Pete Times Forum officially opened on October 20, 1996, then named "the Ice Palace." Constructed along the Garrison Channel in downtown Tampa, the Times Forum has become the jewel of downtown Tampa, hosting more than 150 events and more than 1.5 million guests annually. Home of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning, the arena features state-of-the-art technology and an innovative design which combine to make the St. Pete Times Forum one of the finest facilities in North America. The St. Pete Times Forum encompasses 670,000 square feet with three decks and seven separate levels. The building is 133 feet 10 inches in height and 493 feet in diameter. It contains 3,400 tons of steel, 30,000 cubic yards of concrete and 70,000 square feet of glass. In addition to serving as home of the 2004 Stanley Cup champion Lightning and the five-time Arena Football League champion Tampa Bay Storm, the 21,000 seat venue is the proud home of concerts, family events, ice shows, circuses and other indoor sports.

In 2001, the naming rights to the Ice Palace were sold to the St. Petersburg Times, a daily newspaper which circulates throughout the Tampa Bay area. Situated just two blocks from the Tampa Convention Center and less than three blocks from three of Tampa Bay's finest hotels, the Times Forum serves as the perfect host for NCAA Championship events, offering the finest guest experiences for the participating institutions, student-athletes and their fans. Having now hosted several of the top collegiate events in the nation over the past six years, the Times Forum is now focusing its attention on the 2009 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championships in December. Past major event successes at the St. Pete Times Forum include: 1999 NHL All Star Game, 2003 NCAA Men's Basketball First and Second Rounds, 2004 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, 2007 ACC Men's Basketball Championship, 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball First and Second Rounds, 2008 NCAA Women's Final Four and 2009 Men's SEC Basketball Championship.

In addition to the 2009 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship, the Times Forum is also scheduled to host the 2012 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Frozen Four and the 2015 NCAA Women's Final Four.
