Saturday's Cincinnati-Houston men's basketball game postponed

The American Athletic Conference announced Wednesday that the Cincinnati-Houston game scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, has been postponed due to COVID-19 cases and subsequent contact tracing within the Bearcats' program. 

Additionally, the conference announced that the Houston-Temple game scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 10, will now take place on Jan. 23 in Philadelphia.

TCU postpones two games this week after head coach Jamie Dixon tests positive for COVID-19

Two upcoming TCU men's basketball games are postponed after head coach Jamie Dixon announced on Monday that he tested positive for COVID-19. The Horned Frogs' January 20 matchup against Texas Tech and January 23 game versus Texas are the games that are affected. 

Dixon tweeted that he is now self-isolating.

The Xavier-UConn game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 20, has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Musketeers' program. A makeup date has not yet been announced.

Nebraska pauses team activities after head coach Fred Hoiberg tests positive for COVID-19

Nebraska men's basketball has paused team activities after head coach Fred Hoiberg announced on Sunday that he tested positive for COVID-19.

Hoiberg tweeted that while he's experiencing symptoms, his condition has improved in the last 24 hours. He is currently self-isolating.

UCLA-California women's basketball game for Jan. 24 postponed

The UCLA-California game scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24, has been postponed "due to recent COVID-19 developments within the Golden Bears’ program."

Rescheduling details will be announced once a final decision is made.

Notre Dame-Howard game canceled

The Notre Dame-Howard contest scheduled for Monday, Jan. 18, has been canceled due to COVID-19 related concerns within the Bison program, per a press release from Howard.

"We are all incredibly disappointed by this cancellation," Howard Director of Athletics Kery Davis said in the release. "This was a tremendous opportunity to bring national exposure to our basketball team and the University. However, it goes without saying that the health and welfare of our student-athletes is our priority first and foremost."

Iowa State-Kansas men's basketball game postponed

On Friday, Jan. 15, Iowa State postponed its January 16 road game at Kansas due to COVID-19 protocols within the Cyclones' program. ISU has also paused team activities indefinitely.

Oklahoma-Oklahoma State men's basketball game postponed

On Friday, Jan. 15, Oklahoma State announced that its January 16 home game against Oklahoma has been postponed due to COVID-19. The Cowboys paused team activities indefinitely following a positive COVID-19 test within the program.

Virginia women's basketball cancels remainder of season

The Virginia women's basketball team has canceled the rest of its season, the school announced on Thursday, due to healthy and safety concerns.

The Cavaliers last played on Dec. 13. The decision to cancel the rest of the season after the program postponed or canceled six games because of COVID protocols. Injuries have also limited the team with available players.

"As difficult as it is to end our season in this manner, it is a necessary one," Virginia coach Tina Thompson said in the release. "The health and safety of our student-athletes will always be the number one priority. We will continue to focus on their overall well-being and prepare to resume competition in the fall.”

Virginia is the second ACC women's team to cancel its season. Duke did so on Dec. 25.

The Michigan State-Iowa game scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 14, has been postponed out of "an abundance of caution surrounding the health and safety of the participants."

Both schools will work with the Big Ten to determined a makeup date.

The Iowa State-Kansas State game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 13, has been postponed due to the Wildcats being unable to meet the Big 12's COVID-19 requirements. 

Both schools will work with the conference to reschedule the game.

The Davidson-La Salle men's basketball game originally scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 3, will now be played on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET.

West Virginia and Baylor postponed

Tuesday night's game between No. 13 West Virginia (9-4) and No. 2 Baylor (11-0) has been postponed because of COVID protocols.

According to the official release from the Mountaineers, "The postponement is in response to West Virginia being unable to meet the required COVID-19 thresholds on Monday, as established by the Big 12 Conference. WVU will work with the Big 12 Conference and Baylor to reschedule the game."

Today's Missouri at Auburn women's basketball game has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests and subsequent contact tracing and quarantining within the Auburn program, the SEC announced Sunday.

Clemson's games vs. North Carolina, Syracuse postponed

The ACC announced on Friday that the Clemson men's basketball team's against North Carolina and Syracuse have been postponed. They were going to be played on Saturday, Jan. 9 and Tuesday, Jan. 12.

The postponements come due to a positive COVID test and subsequent quarantining and contact tracing with Clemson. Because of the postponements, the UNC-Syracuse game that was scheduled on Jan. 2 will now be played on Jan. 12 at 9 p.m. on the ACC Network.

On Friday, Jan. 8, St. Bonaventure announced that it's men's basketball game with George Washington has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Colonials' program. The contest was scheduled to be played on Saturday, Jan.9.

Missouri men's basketball pauses activities, postpones game vs. LSU

The Missouri men's basketball program has paused all activities due to COVID-19 protocols.  As a result, Saturday's home game against LSU has been postponed.

The status of Missouri's Jan. 12 home game against Vanderbilt and Jan. 16 game at Texas A&M is still to be determined, according to the school release.

The South Carolina at Ole Miss men's basketball game originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 9 has been postponed, according to an official release from South Carolina. The postponement comes as a result of "positive [COVID-19] tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals" within the Gamecocks program.

Florida State-Pitt game postponed, other Pitt schedule changes

On Thursday afternoon, the ACC announced the postponement of the Florida State at Pitt men's basketball game originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 9. In the same release, the ACC announced the Pitt at Georgia Tech game has now been moved to Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 8:30 p.m on ACC Network.

NCAA's Gavitt: "We will not be starting games two days after Selection Sunday."

On Thursday, Jan. 7, NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt announced that the First Four of the 2021 Division I NCAA men's basketball championship will not begin two days after Selection Sunday. Watch the full clip below:

Gavitt stated that there will be more time between selections and the first games as teams must travel to Indianapolis with the entirety of the tournament being played in Indiana due to COVID-19. This will be the first time in its 10-year history that the First Four is not held in Dayton, Ohio.

Both teams will work with the Pac-12 to reschedule the game. Arizona's game at Washington State on Sunday, Dec. 10 will go on as scheduled.

The Penn State-Ohio State men's basketball game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 6, has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 results within the Nittany Lions' program.

Baylor women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey tests positive for COVID-19, Thursday's game against UConn canceled

On Tuesday, Baylor announced that women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday. The program is currently restricting team activities.

As a result, the Bears' game against UConn on Thursday, Jan. 7, has been canceled. Mulkey is showing no symptoms and will isolate for 10 days before returning to the team.

Big East announces women's basketball schedule change

On Tuesday, the Big East announced several schedule changes, with three games that are postponed: Providence at Creighton (Jan. 6), Creighton at DePaul (Jan. 10) and Seton Hall at Creighton (Jan. 13). Creighton is pausing competition due to a recent positive COVID-19 test, and the Creighton-Providence game will return to its originally scheduled date of Feb. 10.

The Nebraska-Purdue game scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 5, has been postponed "due to health and safety concerns." Both programs will work with the Big Ten to reschedule the game, according to a statement.

March Madness to be held entirely in Indiana

It's official. Indiana is the state synonymous with basketball and it will host the entire 2021 NCAA DI men's basketball championship. The NCAA announced the news Monday, which you can read in its entirety here. These are some of the main points:

  • Games will be played on two courts inside Lucas Oil Stadium and at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Hinkle Fieldhouse, Indiana Farmers Coliseum, Mackey Arena in West Lafayette and Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Only one game at a time will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium.
  • The NCAA will partner with a local health provider to administer COVID-19 tests within the controlled environment for players, coaching staffs, administrators and officials
  • The official hosts of the tournament are Ball State, Butler, the Horizon League, Indiana, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Purdue, which are lending their facilities and staffs to assist with tournament operations.
  • The Indiana Convention Center will be used for practices with multiple courts set up inside the venue. 
  • Most of the tournament teams will stay at Marriott properties, which are connected to the convention center by skywalks. All teams will stay on dedicated hotel floors, with physically distanced meeting and dining rooms and secure transportation to and from competition venues.
  • "Mask Madness" will be a big part of this year's event and include thousands of NCAA-donated masks throughout the state.
  • Selection Sunday is still scheduled for March 14. The Final Four and NCAA title game are set for April 3 and 5.
  • The NCAA is working with local officials to determine if fans can attend games. A limited number of family members of student-athletes and coaches may attend games.
  • CBS Sports and Turner Sports will continue to show all 67 games of the tournament across TBS, CBS, TNT, truTV and digital platforms.
  • Duke (above) won the NCAA championship the last time the Final Four was in Indianapolis. It's also hosted in 1980, 1991, 1997, 2000, 2006 and 2010. It's also set to host in 2026.

Villanova men's basketball postpones next 3 games

Villanova men's basketball announced it is pausing all team activities once again due to COVID-19 issues. The Wildcats' next three games against DePaul (Tuesday), Marquette (Friday) and Xavier (Jan. 13) have been postponed.

Villanova first paused activities back on Dec. 27 due to COVID issues, but announced Sunday that it had returned to practices.

Villanova men's basketball resumes activities

Villanova men's basketball announced it has resumed activities and returned to practice on Sunday. The program went on pause on Dec. 27 due to COVID-19 positive test results among Tier 1 staff members, including head coach Jay Wright.

The school release said Wright has participated in virtual team and staff meetings the past week and is targeting a return to the sidelines for Villanova's next matchup on Tuesday night at DePaul.

Iona men's basketball pauses team activities

On Tuesday, Iona men's basketball announced that it had paused team activities due to a positive COVID-19 test result within its Tier 1 personnel. 

Both the school and the MAAC announced the following changes to the Gaels' schedule:

  • Originally scheduled for this weekend, Iona will now host Niagara on Friday, Jan. 22, and Saturday, Jan. 23. Both games will tip off at 2 p.m. ET.
  • Next weekend's scheduled games at Quinnipiac will now be played on Feb. 26 and 27.

Loyola Marymount men's basketball program pauses activities

Loyola Marymount men's basketball announced Saturday that it will pause all program activities due to positive COVID-19 cases and contact tracing. 

The school announced that its final non-conference game, against Southern Cal, has been canceled due to the pause. LMU will also postpone the opening game of conference play. It is working with the West Coast Conference to reschedule the game. LMU's conference opener was supposed to take place on Jan. 2 against Santa Clara.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program pauses activities

The Southland Conference released a series of scheduling changes in men's basketball following Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's announced 14-day pause of team activities due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Islanders' next three conference games against Southeastern Louisiana (Jan. 2), Stephen F. Austin (Jan. 6) and Abilene Christian (Jan. 9) have been postponed to later dates to be announced. Their non-conference game against Texas, originally scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 29, has been canceled.

On Friday, Dec. 25, Duke announced that the remainder of its women's basketball season is canceled due to safety concerns regarding COVID-19.

The Blue Devils played four games during the 2020-21 season and had been on pause since December 16 due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing within the program.

Wednesday's ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup between No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 25 Louisville will be postponed. Both schools will explore rescheduling for a later date, per Wisconsin's press release.

The Badgers also announced they have replaced its matchup with the Cardinals for a home game against Rhode Island, now scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The game will air on Big Ten Network.

UConn men's basketball pauses team activities

The UConn men's basketball program announced Sunday night it has temporarily paused all team activities following a member's positive COVID-19 test. 

As a result, the UConn-St. John's game originally scheduled for Friday, Dec. 11, has been postponed.

Sunday's Iowa State-DePaul game canceled

The Iowa State-DePaul men's basketball game scheduled for tonight, Sunday, Dec. 6, has been canceled due to COVID-19 protocols inside the DePaul program.

The Cyclones (1-1) have their next scheduled game on Friday, Dec. 11 at Iowa. The Blue Demons have not yet started their season and are now next scheduled to play Friday at Seton Hall.

The Jacksonville State-FIU game will not be played today due to COVID-19 testing protocols and out of an abundance of caution. 

FIU's next game is Saturday, Dec. 12 at North Florida. Jacksonville State is idle until Sunday, Dec. 13 when it visits Tennessee Tech.

Saturday's top-2 matchup between No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 2 Baylor will not be played today, after one student-athlete and one non-student-athlete for Gonzaga tested positive for COVID-19.

The two teams mutually agreed not to play the game Saturday but have agreed to attempt to reschedule the meeting for a later date, according to Baylor's statement.

Here's what you need to know Tuesday morning: 

  • The 2020-21 men's basketball season begins tomorrow.
  • The 2K Empire Classic released its updated schedule for Wednesday's games.
    • Rhode Island is replacing Baylor after Bears elected not to travel to the tournament. On Sunday, Baylor head coach Scott Drew announced on Twitter that he tested positive for COVID-19. Associate Head Coach Jerome Tang will be the interim head coach.
    • No. 18 Arizona State faces Rhode Island at 7 p.m. ET and No. 3 Villanova takes on Boston College at 9:30 p.m. 
       
  • UConn women's basketball announced on Monday that it had temporarily suspended activities
    • The news came after a member of its program tested positive for COVID-19. Per the school's protocol, team activities will remain on hold for at least 14 days. The Huskies will not compete in their first four games. Schedule adjustments will be announced at a later date, according to the release. 
       
  • Duke's home game against Gardner-Webb for Nov. 25 has been postponed.
    • The decision was made because of a positive COVID-19 test within Gardner-Webb's program.
    • Duke's season opener will now be on Saturday, Nov. 28 against Coppin State at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
       
  • Other ranked teams with postponements or cancellations include: No. 11 Creighton, No. 12 Tennessee and No. 20 Oregon.
    • The Ducks were set to face Eastern Washington. According to the Ducks, the decision was made due to concerns about EWU having enough scholarship players available for the game as a result of both positive student-athlete Covid-19 cases and the resulting isolation policies of additional student-athletes under contract tracing protocols. They also announced the game could be rescheduled at a later date.

  • Volunteer Classic multi-team event featuring Tennessee, Charlotte and VCU canceled
    • Tennessee announced Monday that the event was canceled due to COVID-19 contact tracing.
    • The Volunteers were scheduled to play the 49ers on Wednesday, Nov. 25 and the Rams on Friday, Nov. 27. Charlotte and VCU have also canceled their game for Thursday, Nov. 26.
  • Ole Miss suspends team activities until Dec. 7 due to positive COVID-19 tests.
    • The Justin Reed Ole Miss Classic from Nov. 25-27 and the Rebels' Dec. 5 game against Memphis have been canceled.

NCAA provides update on 2021 DI women's basketball tournament

NCAA Vice President of Women's Basketball Lynn Holzman said in a statement released today the committee is committed to a full field of 64 teams. They continue to discuss contingency plans for the tournament, from reducing the number of first- and second-round sites to bringing the tournament to one location.

NCAA plans to hold 2021 tournament entirely in Indianapolis area

The NCAA announced today it is in talks with the state of Indiana and the city of Indianapolis to hold the entire 2021 DI men's basketball tournament "around the metropolitan area" in March and April. Indianapolis was already scheduled to host the 2021 Final Four from April 3-5. 

Originally, 13 predetermined sites were selected to host the preliminary rounds of the tournament.

“We have learned so much from monitoring other successful sporting events in the last several months, and it became clear it’s not feasible to manage this complex championship in so many different states with the challenges presented by the pandemic,” said Dan Gavitt, the NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball.

“However, we are developing a solid plan to present a safe, responsible and fantastic March Madness tournament unlike any other we’ve experienced.”

The AP announces its men's basketball preseason All-Americans

On Wednesday, the AP announced its men's basketball preseason All-America team. The players selected are:

  • Luka Garza, Iowa
  • Jared Butler, Baylor
  • Cade Cunningham, Oklahoma State
  • Ayo Dosunmu, Illinois
  • Corey Kispert, Gonzaga
  • Remy Martin, Arizona State

There are six players on the All-America team because Kispert and Martin received the same number of votes.

ACC releases men's basketball preseason media poll

On Wednesday morning, the ACC released its preseason men's basketball media poll, which featured Virginia in first place with 97 of a possible 155 first-place votes. In total, five school received first-place votes: No. 2 Duke (34), No. 3 Florida State (15), No. 4 North Carolina (7) and No. 5 Louisville (2).

SEC announces 2020-21 men's basketball schedule

On Friday, Nov. 6, the Southeastern Conference released its men's college basketball schedule for the 2020-21 season.

The league will once again play an 18-game conference schedule, which tips off on Tuesday, Dec. 29. SEC member institutions are scheduled to face every team in the conference at least once. Conference play concludes on Wednesday, March 3. The SEC Tournament is expected to run from March 10-14 in Nashville, Tenn.

Duke, Howard to co- host multi-team event in December

Duke and Howard will host the Mako Medical Duke Classic Honoring Dr. Onye E. Akwari in December.

Duke will play Bellarmine on Dec. 4 and Elon on Dec. 6 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Howard hosts Bellarmine on Dec. 6 and Elon on Dec. 8. Times and TV channels are still to be determined.

Dr. Akwari, who died at 76 in 2019, was a world-renowned surgeon and scholar. The Nigerian-American was first African-American surgeon on the faculty of Duke University.

Duke is 11th in Andy Katz's preseason rankings. Former Blue Devil Kenny Blakeney coaches Howard, which welcomes Makur Maker, a highly-recruited 6-foot-11, 235-pound power forward.

In-person attendance at UConn basketball games will be limited to families of student-athletes and coaches

UConn announced Monday that, in accordance with State of Connecticut public health officials, in-person attendance to men's and women's basketball games at Gampel Pavilion will initially be limited to the families of student-athletes and coaches.

This decision could be adjusted if conditions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic improve throughout the season.

"I would like to thank the Department of Public Health and the Department of Economic and Community Development for their guidance and expertise throughout this process," director of athletics David Benedict said in the statement.

Families of student-athletes and coaches that plan to attend games must adhere to public health guidelines and the state's travel advisory policy.

Matchups set for the 2020 ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The 2020 ACC-Big 10 Challenge schedule.

ESPN announced Friday morning the matchups for the 2020 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The showdown is set to take place on Dec. 8-9.

On Day 1, North Carolina will travel to face Iowa, and Duke will host Illinois. On Day 2, Florida State will welcome Indiana, and Virginia will host Michigan State. The full list of matchups is above.

In addition to the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, here are some other schedule-related dates that have been announced:

  • The Big 12 men's schedule begins Dec. 6 with Oklahoma at TCU. Each team will play two conference games before the holiday break.

On Thursday afternoon, it was announced that the CBS Sports Classic – a four-team, two-game event featuring North Carolina vs. Ohio State and Kentucky vs. UCLA – will be played on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. Pac-12 releases full 2020-21 men's basketball schedule

On Thursday, Oct. 29, the Pac-12 announced its full week-by-week men's college basketball schedule for the 2020-21 season. The league received approval in May 2019 to move to a 20-game conference slate beginning this season. The first conference game will be played Wednesday, Dec. 2 with the regular season concluding March 6-7.

Villanova releases schedule for first nine games

On Wednesday, Villanova released its schedule for the first nine games of the season, starting with its appearance in the 2K Empire Classic, where the Wildcats are scheduled to play Wednesday, Nov. 25 and Thursday, Nov. 26. Arizona State, Baylor and Boston College will also compete in the event.

Big East announces preseason poll, all-conference honorees

On Wednesday morning, the Big East announced its men's basketball preseason coaches poll and other preseason accolades.

Villanova was picked to win the conference, just edging Creighton, as the Wildcats received nine first-place votes and 99 point total compared to Creighton's 91. The Bluejays received the other two first-place votes.

Creighton's Marcus Zegarowski was named the preseason Player of the Year and Marquette's Dawson Garcia was named preseason Freshman of the Year.

The Preseason All-Big East First Team includes Villanova's Collin Gillespie and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Providence's David Duke, DePaul's Charlie Moore and Seton Hall's Sandro Mamukelashvili.

Bethune-Cookman opts out of all sports, including men's basketball

On Tuesday, Bethune-Cookman, which competes in the MEAC, announced that it is opting out of all sports for the 2020-21 school year, including men's basketball.

"In the face of a surging COVID-19 spike across much of the country and the State of Florida, we have concluded that the risks are too great for our student-athletes and staff to travel and compete at this time," President Chrite said in the release. "The health and safety of our student-athletes, as well as our coaches, staff and fans will always be our top priority."

We are officially less than a month away from tip-off of the 2020-21 college basketball season on Nov. 25. Here's the latest news to know from Monday, Oct. 26.

  • The Big 12 released its full conference schedules for the 2020-21 men's and women's seasons.
    • The men's schedule begins Dec. 6 with Oklahoma at TCU. Each team will play two conference games before the holiday break. 
    • The women's schedule starts Dec. 2 with Iowa State at TCU. Each team will play two conference games before the holiday break. 
    • The men's Big 12 Championship is scheduled for March 10-13 in Kansas City at the T-Mobile Center. The women's championship is set for March 11-14 in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium.
  • UAB men's basketball announced its 2020-21 schedule.
    • The Blazers will play a 27-game regular season schedule, including nine non-conference games.

  • South Dakota State topped the Summit League's men's preseason poll.

The 2020-21 college basketball season begins one month from today

Hello. It's Sunday, Oct. 25. The 2020-21 Division I men's and women's basketball seasons begin in 31 days.

Here's what you need to know one month before opening night.

  • The DI Council approved moving the start date of the 2020-21 season to Wednesday, Nov. 25.
    • Originally, it was scheduled to begin on Thursday, Nov. 10.
    • No exhibition games or scrimmages will be allowed before Nov. 25.
    • Practices opened on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
    • Andy Katz spoke with the NCAA's Dan Gavitt about the structure for this season.
  • There are three scheduling options for DI men's basketball teams.
    • 24 regular-season games and up to three games in one multi-team event (MTE).
    • 25 regular-season games and up to two games in one MTE.
    • 25 regular-season games without playing in a MTE. 
    • As part of a new blanket waiver approved for MTEs, men's teams can compete in up to two MTEs as long as they do not exceed 27 regular-season games.
  • There are two scheduling options for DI women's basketball teams.
    • 23 regular-season games and up to four additional games in one MTE.
    • 25 regular-season games without participating in a MTE.
  • Both men's and women's teams must play a minimum of 13 games against DI opponents to be considered for NCAA championship selection.
  • The NCAA Sport Science Institute updated its health and safety guidelines for the upcoming season.
