DAVIS, Calif. – No. 11 Pepperdine continued to receive outstanding starting pitching Saturday morning in a 10-0 win (7 inning) at UC Davis. This time it was sophomore Scott Alexander’s (Windsor, Calif./Cardinal Newman HS) turn to shine and he did not disappoint with four strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader with the Aggies.

Alexander’s shutout was the first of his career and the three hits he allowed matched his lowest game total since a 10-2 victory over Oral Roberts University in March of 2008.

Equally dominating today was the Pepperdine offense, which has kept everything easy for the pitchers during its current four-game win streak. Pepperdine (5-1) pounded out 10 hits against Aggie (1-5) pitching for the second straight game led by junior third baseman Colin Rooney’s (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) 2-for-2, 3 RBI day at the plate.

Batting from the No. 9 spot, Rooney clubbed a single, double and drove in two more runs via the sacrifice fly in the fourth and sixth innings. The Saddleback College transfer also scored two runs.

The Waves scored single runs in second and third before putting the game out of reach with crooked numbers across the scoreboard in the fourth through sixth innings.

Freshman centerfielder Brian Humphries’ (El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills HS) bases-loaded two-RBI single was the big hit in a three-run fourth, and in the fifth, the Waves’ came through with three more two-out RBI.

Pepperdine’s scoring run was capped with a two-run sixth, in which freshman designated hitter Ryan Van Amburg (Campbell, Calif./St. Francis HS) doubled in Trent Diedrich (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) and came around to score on Rooney’s sac fly to center.

Diedrich’s run in the sixth was his third of the game, and his two singles and pair of walks enabled Pepperdine’s bottom half of the order (No. 6 through 9 batters) to drive in seven runs on six hits.

Two more RBI came off the bat of leadoff man Bryce Mendonca (San Leandro, Calif./Bishop O’ Dowd HS), while another run was scored on a passed ball.

As if they weren’t doing a good enough job just hitting the ball, the Waves also benefited from a total of three passed balls charged to catcher Scott Kalush, plus 11 walks, two fielding errors and a wild pitch. UC Davis starter Andy Suiter (0-2) was guilty of six of those free passes.

Senior leftfielder David Harris (Glendora, Calif./Glendora HS) led the Waves with four walks in five plate appearances.
