Lynn Takes Two From No. 2
April 18, 2009
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn University's baseball team upended No. 2 Florida Southern 3-2 and 13-3 in a Friday doubleheader. Douglas Toro went 4-for-8 with a home run and five runs batted in while Dan Wright continued his dominance on the mound, striking out a career-high 11 batters in picking up his 10th victory. Lynn improves to 34-13 overall and 10-7 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Fighting Knights needed some bottom of the ninth heroics to claim the win in game one. With the game tied at two, Jason Ten Eyck reached base on an infield single to second base. Trying to get into scoring position, the senior right fielder attempted to steal second but watched as the throw arrived just before he reached the bag. Ten Eyck, though, slid around the tag to set himself up as the winning run.
Having gone hitless in his first three at-bats, Chad Crowe slapped a single up the middle, giving Lynn the 3-2 win.
Wright (10-2) was nearly unhittable for the first seven innings of play, striking out at least one Moccasin in five of the third seven frames and allowing five batters to the plate once. A potential called strike three in the eighth with two outs was instead called ball four, bringing Trae Gore to the dish. Already a strikeout victim three times, this appearance he launched a game-tying two run home run to right field.
In the top of the ninth, the Mocs threatened with the go-ahead run but Gabe MacDougall threw out Nick Stanley at home plate as he tried to score from second.
Toro drove home the first run of the game in the second, singling home Kyle Holloway from second base. The senior designated hitter laid down a perfect bunt down the first base line to score Ten Eyck, putting LU ahead 2-0 in the seventh.
Florida Southern (33-9, 13-4 SSC) had no answer for the Blue & White in game two. Mocs ace Stephen Batman loaded the bases with two outs in the first but threw a mistake 3-1 fastball to Paddy Matera, who proceeded to rip a grand slam into the trees in left center field.
Batman wasn't much better in the second as Daniel Flories smashed a three-run shot to right field and onto Potomac Street, giving Lynn a 7-0 lead. The Fighting Knights broke open the game in the third after teeing off on reliever Jake Guengerich. Holloway opened the frame with his sixth home run of the season and was followed by consecutive doubles from Ten Eyck and Crowe. Toro then launched a two-run shot to the deepest part of the ball park. An error by the Mocs infield scored LU's final run, putting it up 12-0.
Toro drove in his final run of the doubleheader with a single to right field, scoring Holloway. With a lot of run support, Tommy Kahnle (6-2) had an easy time on the hill. He allowed one run and seven hits in five innings with three Ks.
