Tennessee left fielder P.J. Polk scored from first on an errant pick off throw in the bottom of the ninth to give the Vols a 5-4 victory over Arkansas on Saturday afternoon at Robert M. Lindsay Field at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. With the game tied 4-4, Polk singled up the middle with two outs to keep the game from going to extra frames.
"I think the key for us today was doing a good job early against the national pitcher of the week last week (Eibner)," UT coach Todd Raleigh said. "He was 95 miles an hour today, he has an unbelievable arm. I thought we did a really good job of not getting quick outs. We did not have quick innings. Jeff Lockwood gave us a big boost with a home run and then Cody Hawn; that was the difference."
Home runs by third baseman Cody Hawn and designated hitter Jeff Lockwood accounted for three of four runs for Tennessee (20-24, 6-14 SEC). Hawn finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Arkansas (28-12, 12-7) outhit the Vols 11-7 but committed two errors including the error by pitcher Stephen Richards that allowed the winning run to score.
Tennessee left-hander Bryan Morgado (2-1) pitched the final two innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out two.
Razorback reliever Mike Bolsinger (3-4) worked 4-1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double off the bat of designated hitter Travis Sample. Second baseman Ben Tschepikow scored on the play after reaching on an error.
Tennessee tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on Lockwood's solo home run to left field. The homer was his second of the season.
The Razorbacks broke the tie with a run in the top of the fourth. Left fielder Collin Kuhn's grounder to short with runners at second and third sent Tschepikow across the plate to make the score 2-1.
UT second baseman Cody Grisham's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 2-2. First baseman Cody Brown scored on the play after reaching on a single.
The Volunteers took a 4-2 lead on Hawn's 16th home run of the season, a two-run shot, to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Polk scored after leading off the inning with a walk. Hawn is now tied for sixth on Tennessee top-10 list for home runs in a season with former Vol Rusty Ensor.
Arkansas cut the Vols' lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth on Sample's second run-scoring hit of the game, an infield single to send Tschepikow across the plate for his third run of the game.
