Texas wins series opener vs. No. 17 Baylor, 12-4

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 8 Texas Longhorns took advantage of a season-high seven errors by the No. 17 Baylor Bears to post a 12-4 win in Big 12 Conference baseball action Friday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas (31-11-1, 13-8-1 Big 12) equaled a season-high with 12 runs, including six unearned, and logged 13 hits on the evening.
Nursing a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh, the Longhorns scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kevin Keyes hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Loy. Cameron Rupp plated Keyes with a single through the left side of the infield. Tim Maitland reached on an infield single and a throwing error on the play allowed Loy to score. Connor Rowe hit an RBI single to plate Rupp and inflate the cushion to 8-4. Michael Torres drove in Maitland with a groundout to cap off the rally and give Texas a five-run lead.
The Horns put the game out of reach with three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth. The inning featured a two -run single by Rowe.
Texas jumped out to a 4-0 lead hanging deuces on the scoreboard in both the first and second innings. In the home half of the first, Travis Tucker reached on an infield single and Brandon Belt walked to set up an RBI single through the right side of the infield by Kevin Lusson. With runners on the corners, Loy drew a walk to load the bases and a wild pitch plated Belt, staking the Horns to a 2-0 lead. In the second inning, Rupp singled off the pitcher's leg to lead off the inning and with one out, Rowe launched a two-run home run to the scoreboard in left centerfield.
Baylor (26-18, 10-11 Big 12) trimmed the lead to 4-1 with a run in the top of the third when Aaron Miller hit a two-out home run to the buses in right centerfield.
The Horns responded with a run in the bottom of the third to reclaim a four-run lead. Belt reached on a fielding error by the Bears' centerfielder Brooks Pinckard and Lusson drew a walk. Keyes sacrificed the runners to second and third and Belt scored on an error by Baylor's third baseman Raynor Campbell.
The Bears clawed back into the game with two runs in the top of the fifth. Dustin Dickerson singled through the right side, moved to second on a balk and scored on a one-out double to the wall in right centerfield by Miller. Dan Evatt followed with a double to the other gap to drive in Miller and close the lead to 5-3.
Baylor cut the lead to 5-4 with a run in the sixth. Gregg Glime singled to centerfield, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a two-out single to centerfield by Dickerson.
Chance Ruffin (7-2) earned the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits while striking out five in 6.0 innings. Austin Wood entered the game with a 5-4 lead and shut down the Bears to earn his 11th save of the season, scattering two hits and one walk while striking out three over 3.0 shutout innings.
Kendal Volz (3-5) was saddled with the loss, yielding nine runs, six earned, on 11 hits and four walks while striking out nine over 6.1 innings.
Rowe paced the Longhorns, going 3-for-5 with one dinger, one stolen base and five RBI. Rupp and Keyes each had two hits and Rupp scored a game-high three runs.
Miller went 3-for-4 with one double, one home run, two runs and two RBI. Dickerson and Evatt each scored two runs.
The series moves to Waco for game two on Saturday with first pitch at Baylor Ballpark scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
