The TCU baseball program collected its first victory in NCAA Regional Championship action as the Horned Frogs notched a 6-3 victory over Wright State on Friday evening at Lupton Stadium.

Trailing the Frogs by a 1-0 count in the top of the third inning, Wright State found its way on the scoreboard when Aaron Fields doubled, Jeff Mercer reached first base after being hit by a pitch then Casey McGrew connected on a three-run home run to give the Raiders a 3-1 advantage.

TCU responded with a trio of runs of its own in the bottom half of the third frame as the Frogs pounded out four hits in the inning. Brian Holaday, Jason Coats and Matt Curry each collected a RBI hits in the frame to give the Frogs a 4-3 lead after three innings of action.

Curry gave the Frogs an insurance run in the fourth inning after the TCU designated hitter drew a bases loaded walk then TCU added another run in the fifth frame following a RBI single by Matt Vern, plating Taylor Featherston from second base.

That would be all the runs that Paul Gerrish would need as the TCU hurler allowed three runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings of action en route to improving his record to 6-2 on the season. The Frogs¹ right-handed pitcher struck out six batters and did not surrender a walk in the game.

The Frogs pounded out nine hits in the game with Chris Ellington leading the way following a 3-for-3 evening. Coats collected two hits while Curry drove in two runs for the Frogs.

Tyler Newhart suffered the setback for the Raiders as the WSU hurler allowed three runs all earned in 1.2 innings of action. Fields led the Raiders with three hits, including a double, while Ryan Ashe collected two hits in a losing cause.

With the victory, the Frogs improved to 37-16 overall while Wright State dropped to 33-29 on the 2009 campaign.
